I would recommend this if you need the book for class but don't want to own one. It is a little bit pricey for rent but works well for me. I love how the pages are thin and graphic like magazines.

John Jeremiah Sullivan Bears His Stamp and Often With Good Results

I've been reading The Best American Essays for twenty-five years. There always at least three or more gems making each collection worth the acquisition. The 2014 edition is no exception. Editor John Jeremiah Sullivan has kept the book short, just a tad over 200 pages, and the essays tend to be on the shortish side, usually ten or fewer pages, with some exceptions. The subject matter is more raw, uncensored, and disturbing than a lot of previous editions. Two essays deal with repeated child abuse and the complicated, often excruciating manner the authors, Barry Lopez ("Sliver of Sky") and Chris Offutt ("Someone Else") attempt to navigate out of the deathly regions of their abused psyches.

Other gems include

Timothy Beads' "A Matter of Life and Death," a meditation on marriage and mortality;

Wendy Brenner's "Strange Beads," which juxtaposes death, cancer and the escape into consumerism;

Emily Fox Gordon's "At Sixty-Five," a mordant, witty, wise self-examination of "old age";

Mary Gordon's "On Enmity," which shows the thorny, knotty, paradoxes informing the idea of having enemies;

Yiyun Li's "Dear Friend, From My Life I Write To Your Life," which chronicles the depression of a Chinese immigrant who falls in love with America and its glamour and promise of reinvention on one hand but finds her new country's unrealistic expectations a poison on the other;

James Wood's "Becoming Them," about James Wood, in spite of himself, becoming like his parents. He makes his personal story universal by showing how most of us go down the same trajectory.

There are more than enough literary gems for me to give this year's anthology the highest recommendation.

Thought provoking collection

If there is a common thread in most of the 21 pieces in "The Best American Essays 2014," I would have to say it is crisis, ranging from racism to old age, and how each author deals with it. Many are very personal and first person accounts of something that happened to the author rather than a more objective topic.

A few thoughts on the essays.

The pieces are in alphabetical order based on the author's last name. Coincidentally, this means that the two essays on sexual abuse, "Silver of Sky," by Barry Lopez and "Someone Else," by Chris Offutt are back to back (followed by an essay on all things, joy, by Zadie Smith). Both give honest accounts of being assaulted as youths, examine why they kept silent at the time, and describe how it has affected them as adults. Both also wonder why their parents did not notice anything out of the ordinary at the time.

Parental negligence is also a major theme of "Little X," by Elizabeth Tallent, an account of her injuring her arm as a child while her family was on vacation. Rather than seek medical help immediately, her parents chose to simply leave the hotel early. Allowed to sit in the "wayfarback" part of their station wagon, Tallent spends the time crafting a makeshift sling.

Dealing with growing older is another theme of several essays. "The Old Man at Burning Man," by Wells Tower describes a visit there with several friends and his dad, who is undergoing cancer treatment. Surprisingly, it's the father who gets into the spirit of the festival, unfazed by the blatant sexuality of the participants, while the son finds himself acting like a nagging parent. "Becoming Them" by James Woods is about how the author unconsciously finds himself adopting many of the habits of his father as he ages. "At Sixty Five," by Emily Fox Gordon examines how certain personality traits have undergone a change, including her approach to health care.

Several pieces are odes to places, including "Letter from Williamsburg," by Kristen Dombek; "Letter from Greenwich Village," by Vivian Gornick, and "Slickheads" (a journey through Baltimore as a youth) by Lawrence Jackson. Both "Thanksgiving in Mongolia," by Ariel Levy, and "The Final Day in Rome," by John H. Culver discuss a devastating personal event that occurred far from home.

Overall, a very thought-provoking collection. And though the editor took this lightly, some of the pieces may well have "triggers." But it shouldn't keep you from taking a look at this book.

Nasty, Brutish, and Short

If you read essays to learn about a new subject or to look at things in a different way, this may not be the collection for you. This year's Best American Essays are all about the individual, very inward looking. Death looms large, in essays about getting old or one's parents getting old, one about the death of a newborn, the sudden death of a wife, and suicide. The non-death related essays delve into child abuse and enemies.

There are a few essays that lighten the mood, somewhat. Wendy Brenner finds temporary relief from pain by shopping for costume jewelry on eBay, and Zadie Smith finds that life's small pleasures are more satisfying overall than the unsustainable highs of joy.

This year's guest editor, essayist John Jeremiah Sullivan, came to my attention a couple of years ago with an article about a family trip to Disney World. I read it, thought "What a jerk," and that was that. Except that I kept thinking about that darned essay and it finally dawned on me that it was pretty much the opposite of what I first thought it was. I read some more of his essays and found them challenging, surprising, and entertaining. His introductory essay in this collection is what appears to be a learned examination of the origin of the essay. It's pretentious and bloated. Is it a clever parody? Heck if I know.

My advice -- whether you decide to read this year Best American Essays or not, do read Sullivan's collection, Pulphead: Essays.

About the Author

Arthur C. Danto is professor emeritus of philosophy at Columbia University. He is the art critic for the Nation and has served as president of the American Philosophical Association. The Origins of Brown Bear

On a train ride in 1966, the title phrase Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? popped into Bill Martin Jr.'s head. Later, he spotted an illustration of a red lobster in a magazine and contacted the creator, Eric Carle, to ask if he would illustrate his poem. So began Eric Carle's career as a children's book illustrator--along with a life-long collaborative friendship with Bill Martin Jr. Since then, Brown Bear and the three companion titles, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, and Baby Bear, have gone on to sell millions of copies worldwide.

A Question for Eric Carle

Before the Bear books, you worked in advertising but had not yet created a children's book. What went through your mind when you first heard from author Bill Martin Jr. about the Brown Bear manuscript? What made you want to illustrate it?

Eric Carle: At that point I was doing work-for-hire and I was very pleased to have the chance to do something different. I went through the manuscript and could see in my mind images of bright colorful animals, big and bold and simple like in posters. I was actually able to finish the art for this book and deliver it in one weekend. The whole process felt right and I was very excited by the opportunity to work on the book with Bill, which really changed my life and set me on the true course in my career.

PreSchool-Grade 1-- In this new edition of the popular classic (Holt, 1983), the same clean design and crisp text remain. Illustrations, however, have been slightly altered. Stronger colors and more texture help delineate animal bodies more sharply. Positions and shapes are slightly changed, resulting in a less static look. Red Bird is shown in flying position with a sleeker body, sharper beak, and more carefully defined tail and wing features. Yellow Duck has webbed feet and an open bill; Blue Horse has black hooves and teeth showing; Green Frog a spotted back and pink tongue; the former Mother with pale pink skin has become Teacher with beige skin tones and darker hair. The overall effect is livelier and more interesting, although changes are minimal enough that the old edition is still serviceable. Who watches the watchers?

This has been the book of choice for my 7mo daughter's bed time. We heard that it's better to read the same book over and over to young kids so that they become familiar with matching up the words and the sounds.

I know it seems like a simple book, but there's a lot more depth to be uncovered on repeated readings, as I've had the luxury of experiencing every night (and sometimes multiple times during the day) for the last three months.

It opens with a simple question: "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?" And if you were to judge this book by its cover, you might assume the bear to be the protagonist of the story. But as it unfolds, we are...

*** SPOILERS BELOW ***

... taken through a tour of the real and familiar (brown bears, red birds) along with the fantastically surreal (blue horses, purple cats). And despite the cartoonish illustrations and unassuming prose, we come to find that this is a world of paranoia and domestic surveillance. A world where neighbor spies upon neighbor.

"Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?"
"I see a red bird looking at me."

"Red bird, red bird, what do you see?"
"I see a yellow duck looking at me."

The book begins with a lie. When the red bird is asked, "What do you see?", the correct answer is "a brown bear." But she does not admit that she is spying on the brown bear, only complains that the yellow duck is spying on her.

As the pages turn, we learn that all characters are being watched: from the strong (the bear), to the useful (blue horse), to the outcast (black sheep). We learn that all characters know that they are being watched (presumably, this keeps them in line). And we learn that all the characters (except for the bear) are watching one of their peers. (As an aside, it's interesting that this society's only celebrity -- the titular bear -- is the only character to be watched by his peers without the power to watch back. I can only assume that this is Martin's commentary on the impotence of fame.)

As the camera pulls back, we learn that each animal is merely a minor player with myopic vision. In its dramatic, Usual Suspects-esque conclusion, we learn that we are not in a forest or frolicking in the outdoors, but we are in a classroom. An authority figure is introduced:

"Goldfish, goldfish, what do you see?"
"I see a teacher looking at me."

With the introduction of this (white) teacher we realize that these characters who seemed to be free, roaming in their natural habitat, are actually prisoners trapped in the hardbound confines of this book. And yet, even the teacher's vision is limited, for she too is trapped.

"Teacher, teacher, what do you see?"
"I see children looking at me."

The children are vastly more powerful and knowledgeable than any other character. For it is only they -- the readers themselves -- who see all of the characters.

"Children, children, what do you see?"
"We see a brown bear,
a red bird,
a yellow duck,
a blue horse,
a green frog,
a purple cat,
a white dog,
a black sheep,
a goldfish,
and a teacher LOOKING AT US.
That's what we see."

It is those three words -- "looking at us" -- that are most chilling.

If the animals were looking at the children this whole time, why don't they say so? When the bear was asked what he saw, he mentioned only the bird. When the bird was asked what she saw, she mentioned only the duck. Every single character in the book is looking at the children and yet every single one refuses to admit that they see them. It's only the authority figure who has the courage to acknowledge their presence.

How tight must the children's tyrannical grip be to force an entire population into unified submissive silence? The children have complete control, for they not only know everything about the world the characters inhabit, but they also have the power to destroy that world (as many of this book's youngest readers undoubtedly have).

It is the proverbial bear who is not to be poked. But through the bear's opening omission we learn that even he is too scared of the children to publicly acknowledge their existence. The true revelation to this book's opening question is not that the brown bear sees the red bird. It's that he also sees the omniscient, omnipotent children, but is too terrified to say so.

But the children know that he knows.

I don't believe the rumors that this book originated as recruitment propaganda by US intelligence agencies to entice young children to join an elite, "all-seeing" organization that has complete control over the rest of the population, including its powerless authority figures.

Instead, I like to believe that Martin wrote this book (just one year after regular US troops were deployed to Vietnam) as a subversive allegory daring to ask the question "Who watches the watchers?" A question more important today than ever before.

A+++. Would read again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
And oh dear God make it stop.

Great book for young infants!

Its hard to find books newborns and infants... They wont really pay attention to many books, and I have PLENTY that I have tried. I started reading this to my son starting at 1-2 months and he has loved it! He is now 7 months and loves it too! Its short, sweet, and has a cute rhythm to it (does not rhyme). The pictures are vibrant enough to catch his attention and not overly cluttered. There is just one animal on each page and babies love that... Clear outline of an animal. I have other books with seemingly pretty illustrations that are bright and colorful but my son could care less about those.

I highly recommend this book and even buy it as gifts for new moms! It is a classic for every nursery.

Also, I want to note that I dont get sick of reading it over and over...

Great for infants and for toddlers!

This is one of my daughter's favorites. When she was tiny, she loved the simply, bright pictures on each page. Now that she is older, she LOVES sliding the squares over on each page to reveal the next animal. We have been reading this almost daily for over a year and it has held up beautifully. I like that the sliding squares are sturdy and are not flaps that she an easily tear.

Honored as a "Master Pioneer" and "trailblazer of the natural hair care industry" with over 25 years of experience, Ms. Bailey has positioned herself as an innovator and standard bearer for natural hair care. Ms Bailey has previously authored three books, Natural Hair Care and Braiding, Braiding-Easy Styles for Everyone, and Natural Hair Care- Easy Styles for Everyone. Ms. Bailey contributed to the book Milady's Standard, a Textbook of Cosmetology. This book is a "Must have" for every cosmetology/Natural Hair stylist student

I recently completed a Natural Hair styling course at an accredited Cosmetology school that did not focus much on Natural Hair Care/Styling nor, how to care for natural hair textures from straight to tightly curled.

I highly recommend the Milady Standard Natural Hair Care & Braiding book by Diane C. Bailey. This book is very informative and teaches you step-by-step styling for today's versatile styles and textures from the board room -to-a night out on the town.

This book also contains vital information that was left out from the Milady Cosmetology book that my school used as it's textbook. Such as the different types of shampoos and conditioners that are recommended for different natural hair textures, and different styling tools that are recommended for natural hair. And most important how to properly braid without putting tension onto the hair follicle.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in pursuing a career as a cosmetologist or Natural hair stylist. Also to anyone who has children (with natural hair).

Is It worth it?(Hair Care Review)

This is perhaps the best natural hair care book that I have come across. I enjoyed it because it does not read like a wordy textbook, the information is understandable and usable. If you are trying the style in the book for the first time, it will take a couple of times before you can do them neatly.
Practice.:)

I especially liked the section on shampoos,conditioners herbal treatment and rinses. You can make a bunch of combinations of things to use in your hair as opposed to buying already made ones. Buying ingredients and mixing them has always been cheaper to me, in the long run than ordering hair balms,pomades etc.

My biggest complaint is they did not go into hair trimming for naturals. How to identify damaged ends, removing those ends etc.When growing hair out this seems to be one of the biggest problems. I have not come across a lot of definite answers on this either and think it would have enhanced this book so much more. Along with the protective hair styling's is how to keep hair moisturized and healthy when you are wearing braids with faux hair ,crotchet weaves etc.Sometimes these style are worn for months at a time, and when taken out the hair is dry and hasn't been properly moisturized the whole time-which leads to breakage.

Outstanding for the INVENTOR, Even With Its Flaws...

If you read ALL the reviews of ALL seven volumes of Graf's general encyclopedia series, PLUS Graf's 5 "specialty" circuit books (Oscillators, Amplifiers, Detectors, Measuring and Converters), you'll get a noticeable trend: these books are either for very new hobbyists or designers OR very experienced engineers!

Both are actually right, as the series depends on your goals. Since a lot of the info is outdated, it also means a lot is public domain, and you can find some real "gem ideas" that have been forgotten, and with modern component updates, can become the material for a new patent, or components thereof. Circle M's are usually abandoned within 9 years, and didn't even exist back then.

In that vein of advanced scanning, another advanced requirement is the ability to calculate missing values and spot mistakes. Eg. Graf gives a digital power monitor circuit with a missing reset switch and only one (R2) of two resistor values. You can use VSense=r1 + 10K/10K * 2.3, for example, to solve for r1, and use vsense over your VTP, with test values, to get your max voltage.

So, for the newbies, hobbyists and new inventors. Hey, with the right attitude, figuring out the mistakes (without blowing yourself up or burning your garage down) can be a challenge! If you compare circuits with online resources and the awesome McGraw Hill circuit (troubleshooting) series (volume 4 is awesome but very rare and expensive-- had to buy if from India: McGraw-Hill Circuit Encyclopedia and Troubleshooting Guide, Volume 4), you can become the Sherlock Holmes of the design world with this series! Think of it as a puzzle and you won't get as ticked off as some of this series' reviewers seem to!

I test circuits, especially for law firms and inventors, at payroy dot com, for reference, so my perspective and bias is new as well as experienced inventors. If you're an inventor and combine these series with, for example, Practical Electronics for Inventors, Third Edition, you'll have a wonderful and huge set of resources to compare TO the modern web or even smartphone app circuit resources. They say a chess grandmaster has 50,000 positions memorized, I'm guessing that the best inventors eventually have thousands of circuits in mind too! Learning to judge the bad from the good is what the other reviewers who trash this series know how to do-- but studying both good and bad is a GREAT way to learn the difference, as well as spot undiscovered or forgotten gems. Old isn't always bad!!!
