Today we are flooded with the term “innovation” everywhere -- in magazines, journals, conferences, books, blogs, boardrooms, and news. Yes, with this level of attention being paid to “innovation”, it feels like “innovation has arrived!” It has made a splash in the world, especially in the world of business! But, what does this really mean to an organization? How does this energy and enthusiasm impact a person’s daily activities at work?

Innovation wins customers, creates competitive advantage, and increases profit for organizations. But it’s also a notoriously risky venture to enter into, resulting in extremely low success rates and reluctance on the part of investors and decision-makers to support it. Does innovation have to be so risky and unpredictable?

I’m attacking these issues head on by articulating a vision of a reliable, repeatable, and structured approach for driving innovation in organizations.

This vision is shaped by five basic insights about innovation.

1. Innovation is a discipline, not a mystery.

Practicing innovation is not a mystery, contrary to what most people believe. Innovation is a discipline. It can be planned, practiced, improved, and excelled at. It can be formalized as a disciplined process. We can approach the practice of innovation (creating new products, services, and customer experiences) like a science, with a set of practical and rigorous methods, tools, and frameworks.

2. Innovation process needs clear modes, mindsets, and methods.

Modes provide innovators the focus necessary to deal with complex innovation challenges. Mindsets provide them with clear ways of thinking to fully understand challenges and appropriately conceive responses. Methods facilitate step-by-step actions to reach desired outcomes and end goals. This way of framing structured innovation is particularly valuable for innovators to effectively work together as teams.

3. Four primary forces shape innovations.

The primary forces that shape successful innovations are business, technology, design, and society. Business force relates to the question of what is viable in the market -- where are the market gaps and how to fill them. Technology force looks for what is possible with new emerging technologies and how to create new offerings. Design force asks the question of what is desirable for people and how to create humanized solutions. Society force is focused on what is sustainable for the community and the environment. Integrating these forces produce innovations that deliver higher user and economic value.

4. Innovations need collaboration and teamwork.

Innovations use structured and disciplined processes in which all stakeholders participate. For example, engineers, technologists, business analysts, strategists, researchers, designers, social scientists, community members, and even end-users participate in the process. Collaborative thinking at many levels of the organization is needed to conceive reliable solutions.

5. The same generic process benefits many diverse projects.

A generalized innovation process -- comprehensively conceived for observing, reframing, ideating, prototyping, and planning -- can be used to develop a wide variety of concepts like products, services, experiences, messages, channels, business models, or strategies. It can also support the needs of various types of organizations -- corporate businesses, social organizations, governments, entrepreneurs, or networked organizations.

Mostly a pitch for consulting services, but some useful information

This is a book I wanted to like, but it is so superficially written that I can only give it two stars. On a generous day, I might have given it three stars, but not any more.

101 design methods turns out to be 101 tools for the innovation process (from initial stage all the way through to commercialization). The whole process is covered but it is fair to say that the focus in around the prototype stage. If you have read a book about design consultancy IDEO you know pretty much the type of work described in this book (anthropological methods, Post-it notes, etc.)

Each method gets two pages, which are identically structured:
* 10% description of method. Unfortunately this section is far too short. Sadly the author provides absolutely no references. Instead he takes credit as if these methods were novel. You might think that in a book for practitioners, references are not so important. Fair response, but at the very least there should have been some references for further readings.
* 35% picture. This is generally an illustrative picture. Good.
* 20% case study. It is nice with case studies even though they are written up in a too sanitized way. In fact, the section is often a repetition of the description of the method. The most typical case study is a not-for-profit service.
* 25% practical steps. The steps are always almost identical: identity, analyze, report. This section is extremely tedious and repetitive. Totally useless material.
* 10% filler material. Also not useful.

I seriously question the author's judgement when describing the methods in this manner. Personally, I don't like the very mechanical approach of presenting the tools. Still, there will definitely be some methods that you would like to look further into. For this reason the book could have been a three star book, if the author would have given the reader some advice for further readings. If the case studies would have been more illustrative the book would probably be worth four stars.

The book is printed in full color on pretty good paper. The layout of the book feels modern and professional.

I am on my third try to read this book and once more i am giving up and this time completely. I find the ideas presented by the author so disagreeable and precisely counter to innovation. This is a book on innovation by committee, innovation for wannabe innovators who have no clue or even any capability for innovation - much like trying to teach pigs how to fly. You would have better luck trying to teach ostriches how to fly - at least they have some semblance of wings. Its a good thing this notion of innovation was not around when the rocket was invented, the air plane, lockheed skunk works, the steam engine, the computer, even the web, html, and arpanet/internet. All of them most likely would have died a quiet unknown death through suffocation by committee. You want to have innovation in your organization ? Then let lose the dreamers, leave them alone , and keep the fuddie-duddies away from them.

As a consultant helping teams through innovation processes I found this book to be a wonderful compendium of frameworks and techniques to help focus ideas and processes. For a consultant or trainer in business or technology innovation this book provides a ready resource of methods that can be used to help uncover, unclutter or focus thinking. For teams on their own the book can be a ready resource to guide the innovation process; what to do next in innovating new products or services. The book proposes a seven step framework that helps you walk through the innovation modes: Sense intent, Know Context, Know People, Frame Insights, Explore concepts, Frame Solutions and Realize offerings. It goes into great depth for each mode providing method and technique that will help inspire new ways of thinking about how to approach an innovation challenge.

If Young Adult was a genre of Plays, this would be at the forefront
By Isn't He Sweet?
While this will most certainly not go down into the pantheon of great dramatic works of the 21st century, it's definitely worth paying attention to. Able to mix the most slapstick of comedy with a whole lot of heart, the story of a teacher "preying" on young students quickly takes a back seat to the more important issue, that of growing up. Great characters and a fun script, DEFINITELY worth a read.

excellent resource

A fantastic book full of a many different concepts that should be covered in instrumental music classroom. The chapter on rhythm and the many variations on how to teach it is worth purchasing the book alone. This will be a book that I re-read from time-to-time to re-energize myself in my teaching.

Review: 'The State We're In' by Adele Parks

The description of ‘The State We’re In’ is quite vague, resulting in readers starting the book without hardly any idea of what will happen to the characters. In times where we often already know the entire plotline of a book before actually reading it ourselves, I thought this was quite a refreshing experience and will therefore try to not give away too many details in my review. The book tells the story of two characters, Jo and Dean, who meet on a flight from London to Chicago. Jo and Dean appear to be each other’s opposite; Jo is a slightly ditzy hopeless romantic, while Dean is an attractive cynical business man who does not believe in love. Jo wants someone to talk to during the long flight to Chicago, while Dean just wants to travel alone and in silence. I’m not going to say much more about the plotline besides that after this flight, both Jo’s and Dean’s life will never be the same again.

A lot of people have said that this is Adele Parks’ best novel, but seeing as I haven’t read any of her other books I can’t really compare it to anything else. It took me a couple of chapters to get into the story, but as soon as I was I wanted to keep on reading and discover what would happen. The story is told from the perspective of four different characters: Jo, Dean, Clara and Eddie, and they’re all well-developed with fascinating and complicated background stories. The book deals with some universal themes: relationships, marriage, family ties, and Adele Parks explores these topics in an intriguing way. Her writing style is intense and detailed and even though this is my first Adele Parks novel, I am convinced she’s an amazing storyteller.

This book is surrounded by a lot of mystery and I think it is pretty amazing that if you look up reviews, everyone seems to respect the decision to keep the ending a secret. The publisher created the Twitter hastag #KeepTheSecret and it seems to have worked. However, all the buzz and excitement regarding this ‘secret’ prepared me for something big, something spectacular. And while the ending did not necessarily disappoint me, I couldn’t help but get a feeling like: Is this really it? Therefore, I recommend people who are thinking of picking up this novel to definitely pick it up, but do not just read it for the secret, read it for the wonderful story that’s inside. ‘The State We’re In’ is an intriguing and emotional love story; my first Adele Parks reading experience and it has definitely made me want to pick up more of her work in the future!

Opposites attract

The story covers a few days, with a few chapters back in 1976 enlightening the present day situation, and the conclusion a few years down the road.
Eddie was a crap father who abandoned his wife and kids, Dean and Zoe. He's now dying in the hospital and it's the first time Dean sees him again in decades.
Clara is leaving her husband of forever and hopes her grown-up children won't hold it against her - especially Jo, forever romantic and unpractical. Jo's last whim is to fly over the Atlantic and break up her former fiancé's wedding.
When Jo and Dean meet, it's the unlikeliest match ever. However, how they meet, and how their story and family stories make sense, is a very enjoyable adventure.
When I started the last chapter I had a sudden inkling of the final twist. It's a bit too much and sad at the same time, but it does give the story a depth it would not otherwise have possessed.
My only complaint is with Jo's character. There is absolutely no way I could believe she was 35 - she is so immature and impulsive you'd think she was at least ten years younger. But it's a detail.

Truly a heartwarming and heart wrenching read. Beautiful, flawed characters, the right amount of realism, romance, llight and shade and an incredibly compelling story, read in one sitting. A wonderful book.

A Comprehensive Text that Needs to be Republished

How in the world could such a book be out of print? Does it reflect the mentality of Christians today, that they are more focused on themselves than on God? The publisher probably wouldn't take this book out of print unless people just weren't buying it. Well, people need to read this book. It is a hidden classic, part of a series Herbert Lockyer produced on the Bible. The names and titles (and attributes) of God are the very foundation and purpose of the revelation of the Bible. This book is comprehensive and an excellent resource for critical Bible study concerning the Person of God. Such a book would help restore the theocentric and Christocentric thinking and living that is so absolutely critical for correct Bible interpretation and Biblical obedience.

Frankly, this literary critic didn't expect Mick Foley's memoir of his life as Mankind (and his other wrestling personas, Cactus Jack and Dude Love) to hit No. 1 on Amazon.com's hardcover nonfiction bestseller list in its first literary bout. The cover is cluttered and confusing, and do we really need 500-plus pages of Foley's boasts? Yes. Foley gives his all for his calling, and he burns to tell his adventures. Take the famous tale of how he lost most of his ear (the bloody result is depicted in the 16-page color-photo section). It was in his 1994 bouts with Vader (Leon White): after getting a broken nose, a dislocated jaw, and 21 stitches in the first match, Foley did his "hangman" routine, wherein he catches his neck between the second and third ropes and spins them into a twist. "The end result is the illusion of a man being hanged by his neck while his body kicks and writhes in an attempt to get out... the man actually is hanging by his neck and the body really does kick and writhe in an attempt to get out." Unfortunately, in the prior match, Too Cold Scorpio had had the officials tighten the ropes, so Foley tore off his ear to avoid death by strangulation, like "a fox that chews off its paw to escape a trap." Great book, but prinitng error in my copy

Very entertaining book. After purchasing this 6 months ago I finally got around to reading it. I would find myself unable to put the book down for hours. My one gripe with the book, would be that my copy had a printing issue where half of chapter 26 and the entirty of chapter 27 & 28 where missing from my book and instead replaced with pages 371 through 402 that I had previously read in the book. Nonetheless, I loved the book and found it entertaining, but do wish that I would be able to read the book in its entirety the way it was meant to be read. How will I ever sleep at night not knowing what happen during Foley vs Sabu? Oh well, definitely recommend it anyways!

Good Audio Book, But Not as Good as the Real Thing

The first thing I said after reading this book last fall in hardcover is that is that they've got to put out an audio version, and Mick Foley has to read it. After all, the book has a lot of humor in it by the way the story's told, and Foley himself is a pretty funny-sounding guy as well, so it should be a sure-fire hit, right? Well, it's here, and although they had to condense 500 pages into three-and-a-half hours, it's retained most of the humor and depth of the actual book.
I have to say that Foley's narration has its moments, but not that enough of them. Foley doesn't really hit his stride until about a half-hour in when he gets into his training from Dominic Denucci and gets a few impressions in. His impersonation of Vince McMahon is almost uncanny. He also does most of the swerve bits in the book (like the one where he claimed he hugged Eric Bischoff on his way out of WCW), and those are definitely funny. But, unfortunately, most of the narration is Foley just reading out of the book, which is cool since they're his own words, but isn't quite what I was expecting. I think some better direction could have helped here.
Most of the book is covered in this recording. The only things that are spare in their discussion are his parents, his courtship of Collette, his last days in WCW, and Owen Hart. In fact, Owen wasn't even mentioned at all in this version, which is strange because Foley dedicated about 10 pages to him in the book. I was also hoping for some of the extra chapters that will be in the paperback version to be released next month. Still, it was an easy purchase, it's fun to listen to if you're going on a long drive somewhere, and it might be something cool to play to anybody you know that pooh-poohs wrestling.

Humorous, insightful and full of thumbtacks

Mankind: Have a Nice Day! gets behind the curtain to reveal the politics and planning behind running a wrestling show, as well as gets Mick Foley's thoughts behind his greatest career achievements. Mick Foley isn't a dumb musclehead like you might expect a pro wrestler to be. His plain-and-simple storytelling style allows his warm, yet mischievous, personality to shine through. He didn't use a ghostwriter because he wanted the creative license with the book whether it was a success or a failure. Combine that with a truly interesting and exciting life to talk about, and even people who don't know the difference between a wristlock and a wristwatch can appreciate this one man's life. The book begins with the grotesque story of his 1994 match in Germany with Vader for WCW where he lost half of his right ear. The best thing about this first chapter is that although the common reader would probably shy away from a story as violent as this one, Foley tells it in such a good-natured and funny way that it almost seems like it's just another day at the office. Mick Foley has met, in almost Forrest Gump-like fashion, many of the great past and present wrestlers in the business. Foley also eulogizes Owen Hart, who died in May while he was still in the process of writing, as well as his longtime friend Brian Hildebrand, who passed away recently of complications from cancer. Mankind: Have a Nice Day! is an entertaining read for fans and non-fans alike. Jim Ross put it best in the foreword, "I guess in some ways this is a love story. The story of one man's love of his life. A life worth living." If you want to judge a book by the cover, take a look at the back and see the injuries of Foley diagrammed in a clean, efficient way. If you want to judge the man by the book, I would say this is one hell of a book written by one hell of a man. ....
