Reading this book was one insane trip

The book is a transcript of a 3 day seminar. On the first day, you will learn the basics of NLP. On the second day, you will start to learn how to apply NLP. On the third day, your eyes will be opened to the full range of posibilties that NLP presents.

The authors are very, very clever and, it was only until I finished the book, that I realized they were practicing what they were teaching the whole time: the book is basically a 3 day long NLP pattern. Once you finished the book, not only will you know NLP ideas, you will know how it is like to have it worked on you.

Extremely mind blowing stuff. I've read another NLP book before published by Harper&Collins but this one beats it 100x. This will be one of the books that I will never re-sell and will always keep with me from move to move.

These two guys are brilliant, creative

A transcript of a workshop done by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. These two guys are brilliant, creative, clever beyond reckoning, and can guide you by the hand out of overthinking. As a reformed overthinker, I can tell you that there is no such thing as overthinking, only ineffective thinking repeated endlessly. If you want to know more, just buy the book, wait a month, and see how you're doing.

They never discuss overthinking here, it's just that this book is such a stellar example of clear-headedness that it's liable to rub off on you.

How can I make things really groovy?

Frogs into Princes (1979) is the first-ever comprehensive book on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). It's a seminar transcript [or "trance"-script, to be punny (since its co-founder Richard Bandler is also a hypnotist)] that was edited and published by John Stevens [a.k.a. Steve Andreas, who studied under Abe Maslow (hierarchy-of-needs) and Fritz Perls (founder of gestalt therapy)].

It's so well organized and presented, together with a detailed introduction, that you feel like you're a part of the live-audience. This leads to the paradoxical problem of reading the book too casually, similarly to passively watching a performance, as opposed to treating it as the actual manual of techniques and profound concepts that it really is (which are based on extensive research that began in 1973). The paradox is that that's exactly how the authors (Bandler and John Grinder) want you to read it - because you learn more, as they tell you, subconsciously - without attempting to consciously analyze or memorize the (otherwise overwhelming) new terminology and ideas. Ideally, you should re-read the whole book immediately after you're done with your initial reading, so you could finally completely understand the proper attitude and approach that the authors are trying to instill within you (yes, you must read it twice).

NLP is not a household name as such - whereas, its most famous teacher, for example, is: Tony Robbins, who was trained by co-founder Grinder [pronounced as in "grin", not "grind"]; it also is the scientific foundation of popular TV shows like "Lie to Me", which exemplify how to read subtle "eye accessing-cues" (and other body-language) found throughout Frogs Into Princes. As they write (on page 47): "Eye movements and body movements will give you information about process. The proper domain, in our opinion, of professional communicators is process. If you indulge in content, you are going to unavoidably impose part of your belief and value system on the people you communicate with. The kinds of problems that people have, usually have nothing to do with content; they have to do with structure, the form of how they organize their experience."

Bandler and Grinder say (on page 9): "Our job is to figure out what it is that effective therapists do intuitively or unconsciously, and to make up some rules that can be taught to someone else." They have done a phenomenal job of that over the years. In addition to educating you, they will also humor you - as in the following interspersed witticisms:

(page 9): "[Academics] are not interested in the real world, and having lived in it I can sometimes understand why."

(page 32): "You can't even spell 'phonetics' phonetically!"

(page 114): "...remembering to breathe; oxygen is essential for this whole process."

(page 166): "It's important for some people to have the illusion that their conscious mind controls their behavior. It's a particularly virulent form of insanity among college professors, psychiatrists, and lawyers."

Towards the end (page 190) of this pioneering 194-page book, they ask rhetorically "How can I make things really groovy?" - which is the above title of my review [that you've probably noticed at the subconscious level, right?] - after which they proceed to briefly discuss the limitless potential within NLP for "generative" change.

For those of you who might only want the latest, condensed, quick-and-easy, "self-help" version of NLP, I highly recommend Bandler's "Get the Life You Want" (2008). That one, you don't have to go over twice - and you could use it as a "pocket-guide", too. Frogs Into Princes - and especially, The Structure of Magic (vol. 1: 1975 & vol. 2: 1976) - is intended more for researchers or serious students of NLP.

I used that book two weeks before my exam and I got 7 let me tell you something it's the only book where you will find strategies and tips to answer the question easily for the all four sections and the book has the answers questions of all parts , the listing part it awesome it exactly the same voice as the exam so you won't be lost during the exam the reading section it the same they have I great texts you will learn new vocabulary the length it's exactly the same if you follow all instructions of the book you reach your goal

Are the predictions real?

Just about finished with this book and really enjoyed it. Had read the one before this too. I then, out of curiosity, Googled "Harry Dent". You would not believe the number of articles on how many of his predictions have gone completely bust.
I like his writing style and his level of confidence. I also like all the data he provides. I would take this book as "one more bit of data for your knowledge base" and not as the Bible as to where to put your money.

A big disappointment

I have read most of Dent's books and enjoyed them. This is his weakest by far. I had high hopes, but was left vey disappointed.

Dent made his name on demographics and his spending cycle, which are good tools for directionality but fail to match actual events. He tried to cover this by adding more cycles which stretches reality too far. I have a real problem with his supposed geopolitical cycle and his argument in the book is very poorly done. He has multiple pages of current negative events, but blows off the period of 1983 to 2000 by saying nothing bad happened; ignoring Beirut, Chernobyl, Columbine, Iraq invasion, Tinammen Square, etc. His innovation cycle is supported by some slight of hand that just shows the weakness of the basic argument. All he seems to have left is the sun spot cycle, with such a large time variation to negate its value and no real reason for it to have any effect. His long term cycles are even less credible.

A recession is likely coming, but this book doesn't really present anything new for discussion. I expected so much more.

A bombshell of a book !

This book was a big eye opener ! If Harry Dent a Harvard grad in economics, is correct, the world is about to see the biggest bubble burst in history ! Do you want to bet against it ? Go ahead I dare you. Harry carefully crafted his book of cycles to make predictions about the stock markets around the world. After a 7 year bullish cycle how much longer can the bull market go on ? If he is correct, its time to prepare for major catastrophic events about to take place. Even if a bubble does not burst like he says it will, it won't hurt you to put your money in a safe place while riding out these times. His explanations are written so that anyone can understand what he is saying and why he is saying it. I enjoyed reading his book and give it 5 stars.

Great for bilinguals or polyglots

As a bilingual person and also someone learning several different languages, I find myself comparing how the everyday American words are being translated to Spanish, French, Mandarin, etc. Although I use these words in common conversation, there are some phrases that don't truly mean anything to other languages. In fact, English speakers don't use some of the phrases included in this book very often anymore.

As an editor, however, I find that it's a great exercise on my vocabulary every once in a while. It's like reading a favorite novel that I haven't read in so long.

Non-native speakers will find many (idiomatic) expressions in this book extremely helpful. My best advice is to test and practice your language skills with conversational books like these as often as possible.

Buy the 5 star paperback! ! !

This review is ONLY for the KINDLE EDITION....

This book has not been adequately programed for electronic use. The keyword index has links to 98% of the entries, but that is all that is programed. The internal cross-referencing is not programed and is functionally useless. There is no easy way to find the entry you are looking up. If you want to browse, you must always start at the letter A and page through as many as ALL 2200 entries until you find what you want. If you use the index, and choose an entry that is not the one you want, in order to get back to the index, you must work through the menu to find the index again, and then find the entry you want in the index and try that one. If that doesn't work, it's the same thing all over. You will get tired easily. This version will save you NO time and effort, and yet it costs almost as much as the paperback.

The paperback was designed for easy browsing...for paging through both the index and the entries as with any reference book. This kindle-ization has turned a simple, smoothly operating reference work into an electronic nightmare.

The content is excellent....when you can find it. Unfortunately, this electronic disasterpiece will cause a number of negative reviews which will be mixed in with the good reviews of the paperback.

Buy the paperback. It doesn't cost but about fifty cents more.
