This book is about money. It is about economic analysis, engineering economy, financial calculations, cost reduction, and profit improvement. It is written for students and for those working in design, process and manufacturing engineering, purchasing, and financial analysis in both manufacturing and service organizations; for members of financial improvement teams; and for technical and senior managers. It is also for individuals, proprietors, and small organizations.

No longer are an organization's financial planning and improvements the sole responsibility of a small number of technical, financial, or management staff. Today, organizations implement economic decisions using teams of operating employees, engineers, managers, office and manufacturing personnel, technical and marketing employees, accounting and nonaccounting staff, and others. This book is for those who are or will be members of those teams.

Today, approximately half of the people in the U.S. workforce are responsible for funding their own retirement without employer contributions, and this segment is growing. Also, government retirement plans such as Social Security are becoming a smaller proportion of retirees' benefits. Individuals face more complex financial decisions than in the past as they manage their current finances and plan for future retirement. This text is comprehensive. It not only covers the traditional economic analysis topics but also extends coverage to basic financial statement and accounting understanding. It is difficult to work in a contemporary organization today without a basic understanding of the financial vocabulary and concepts. Employees who are required to do economic analysis and make financial improvements must understand basic vocabulary and concepts about the organization's financial system and its financial statements.

Classical analysis, applying traditional engineering economy principles and mathematics, is intertwined with other contemporary topics throughout the book. The basic principles are unchanging. Applications vary over time.

The emphasis is on both problem solving and nonmathematical considerations in economic analysis. Facts, data, time value of money, and analysis must be combined with organization characteristics, human factors, and other nonmathematical characteristics. Balance and combination are critical. Long-term financial results must be balanced with short-term organization goals.

Coverage also includes quality economics. At first, this may not appear to be a 1noneyrelated topic. However, experienced managers, engineers, and technicians know that as much as 20% or more of the organization's sales revenue can be lost due to poor quality. Today's staff is expected to understand quality, its cost, and its improvement. Quality is connected to the customer, design engineer, process employees, and to money. It is important.

Team approaches are highlighted throughout the text and in cases. Today's engineers, technicians, managers, and operating employees are normally part of multiple teams that are concerned with selection, analysis, and monitoring projects and investments. Senior management is not as all-knowing as in the past. Project and investment decisions are complex and often require a team for a solution.

In addition to questions and problems at the ends of the chapters there are discussion cases. These cases demonstrate the principles and concepts of the chapters. They are taken from actual situations, and are modified for inclusion in the book. Cases generally have no single textbook solution; multiple correct solutions often exist. And their information is never complete; assumptions are made to bridge the gaps. The mathematical components of the case are mixed with human and organization requirements and preferences. Very valuable real-world skills can be developed when analyzing and presenting cases. There are over 65 end-of-chapter cases, and a comprehensive case covering major topics is included in the Instructor's Manual.

There is not one set of financial principles for organizations and one set for individuals. For this reason, many techniques and tools apply to both organizations and individuals. Corporations, proprietorships, partnerships, not for profits, service organizations, manufacturers, medical offices, education, government—every organization and individual is an economic entity. Economic analysis principles apply to all. We do not change "financial hats" when we leave for work in the morning or when we return in the evening. Our economic understanding, analysis, and abilities are with us at home and work. Oikos, Greek for "house" or "household," is the root for the world economics. Economics begins in the home and extends to the organization, to the community, and to the nation.

A final theme throughout the book, detailed in the final chapter, is continuous improvement. To analyze and decide on a particular course of economic action is only the beginning. The investment or project must be monitored and improved throughout its life. The financial, economic, competitive, technical, and operating environments are so dynamic that investments need to be improved and monitored frequently. Few projects continue or are completed in exactly the same manner as planned. The concepts of monitoring, what-if, and continuous financial improvement appear throughout the book with specific techniques detailed in the last chapter.

Each chapter has a similar format to assist the reader to understand and review the material.

This format lends itself to defining key terms and concepts initially, covering the content in detail, and then reviewing and applying content principles to questions, answers, problem solution and analysis, and discussion of applied, real-world cases.

The chapters are grouped into four parts.

Part I, Financial Concepts, describes the economic system in the United States, historical record keeping and financial statements, and the Accounting Equation. Part I includes Chapter 1, Introduction to Financial Decisions; Chapter 2, Introduction to Financial Statements and the Accounting Equation; and Chapter 3, The Accounting Equation—Depreciation, Inventory, and Ratios.

Part II, Financial Analysis and Time Value of Money is based on the traditional approaches of interest calculations, applications of time value of money, and project and investment analysis and justification. Part II includes Chapter 4, Return on Investment and Single-Payment Calculations; Chapter 5, Annual Amount and Gradient Functions; Chapter 6, Time Value of Money Applications; and Chapter 7, Analyzing, Selecting, Monitoring, and Evaluating Projects and Investments.

Part III, Financial Decision Making, looks at the decision-making tools that complement time value of money analysis, such as breakeven, minimum costs, taxes, and replacement. Part III includes Chapter 8, Breakeven Analysis; Chapter 9, Minimum Cost Analysis; Chapter 10, Replacement Analysis; and Chapter 11, Taxes.

Part IV, Continuous Financial Improvement, presents the contemporary topics of quality economics and how to make continuous financial improvements in the organization. Part IV includes Chapter 12, Economics of Quality; and Chapter 13, Continuous Financial Improvement.

• Instructor's Manual with PowerPoint CD (0-13-048071-1) with solutions to questions, problems, and cases. Suggestions for presenting the topics and problem and case solutions are given.

Prerequisites

This text requires knowledge of college-level algebra and the use of a calculator. Example problems are solved using a basic calculator with exponential functions. However, it is helpful to have a programmable calculator and to program it with the time value of money equations. A scientific or financial calculator hard-wired with the time value of money formulas may also be useful.

Most readers are familiar with spreadsheets by the time they read this text material. Software such as Microsoft's Excel contains most of the depreciation and time value of money functions in its fx routines. Computer spreadsheets may be used with the examples, problems, and cases but are not required. These different solution techniques are demonstrated in the text and the reader is encouraged to use them.

Flexible Chapter Sequencing

Readers may choose to read or teach the materials in a sequence different from the one presented in the text. For example, financial statement topics may be omitted and the reader could start with the chapters on interest calculations and time value analysis. This approach would be valid in a curriculum in which accounting is a prerequisite. Or the last section, on measurement and continuous financial improvement, may be omitted without revising the applications of the first three sections.

The basics of interest calculations in Part 11 can be studied without covering Part III on tools and application of financial decision models. Part IV topics, monitoring and improvement techniques, can be introduced after Part II.

When used in in-service training courses for engineering, operating, management, and improvement teams, the parts and chapters may be selected individually as they apply to the organization's needs. For example, the organization's actual financial statements and cost information can be used to supplement Part I financial statement material. Specific chapters from Parts II and III can then be selected. If the organization is just beginning or continuing team approaches to financial improvements, topics from Part IV can be emphasized.

Specific focus on engineering, manufacturing, or service organizations can be obtained by assigning and discussing those examples, questions, problems, and cases that correlate to the size and type of organization.

Individuals interested in using the text for their personal financial understanding and improvement can focus on Parts I and 11 with specific emphasis on the examples, questions, problems, and cases that relate to the individual and the family.

The topics of the book can be used to prepare for the state engineering exam. Topics in Part II, sections of Part I on depreciation, and sections of Part III on breakeven and minimum costs would be useful.

No prior economic or financial background is assumed. However, if readers have an accounting or financial background, they will find many new applications and approaches to topics with which they are already familiar.

An excellent text book introducing the basic principles of applied economic analysis. The author uses many everyday practical examples to help illustrate Time Value Money (TVM) calculations. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding on how to use TVM calculations or help justify projects, expenditures, etc. either at work or at home.

About the Author
Rabinder Singh Bhamra was born in 1940 and raised in the city of Amritsar in Punjab, India into an industrial family. He grew up with an interest in the fine arts and finished his college education at Khalsa College, Amritsar with a Bachelor of the Arts. Later, the author did his Honors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT in Bombay, where he worked for six years as a Production and Quality Manager before migrating to Long Island, New York. The author has been living in New York since 1972 with his wife, Balwinder Kaur of Chandigarh. He worked as a Principal Engineer and Quality Manager in microelectronics and electronic components manufacturing with General Instruments Corp. Presently, he is working with County of Nassau as a Project Manager. The author has been involved as a volunteer in the management of the Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society since 1972 for 19 years until 1991, where he served as a General Secretary, Vice President and Trustee. He was one of the founding members of the Sikh Council of North America in 1978 and helped start the Sikh Day Parade on Baisakhi Day since 1988. He has also helped run the Sikh Studies Program at Columbia University for 10 years. As a community spokesperson, he presented the Sikh religion in interfaith meetings and conferences. He was working with JUS Punjabi T.V. till 2011, the first National Punjabi T.V. Channel in the USA, as a Talk Show Host and Senior Correspondent. He is deeply involved in the spread of Gurmat through writing, lectures, katha, kirtan and TV presentations. The author is also an Honorary Chaplain with the Department of Police, County of Nassau, New York.

A way to understand Spirituality and live simple and peaceful life...

OMG... One of the best book I have read so far. It explains in simple terms about the Sikh Religion. A religion of humanity. How to understand God, Live your simple life. How to love humanity. How to respect all the different faiths, I would highly recommend everyone to read this book if you want to understand what is spirituality is. God Bless Rabinder Singh Bhamra.

pretty definitive

I am just getting into jazz and was looking to read about the music and a friend recommended this book. It is pretty definitive. Starts in Africa and moves forward. It was written in the 50s so keep that in mind. Still, this is a very good book to start with if you want to know more of the A-B-Cs of the jazz genre and the other genres that preceded jazz itself.
I also kept a pen an paper with the book to jot down notes (names, songs, etc etc with page numbers) to refer to later and/or go back and listen to.

A lovely book, a labour of love... Sometimes considered the first SERIOUS jazz history.
Too heavily leaning on sociological and ethnological insights though (I'm afraid not always supported by the more recent research), but it still makes for wonderful reading, essential for everyone who loves old and / or classical jazz...
Contemporary reader beware, the book does show the signs of times!

About the Author

Chade-Meng Tan is an award-winning engineer, international bestselling author, thought leader, and philanthropist. Simple, quick, super-effective practices for increasing joy in your minutes, days & years

I first came across "Joy On Demand" by chance when I walked into Meng's talk at the 2016 Wisdom 2.0 Conference. And boy was I glad! In the space of his short talk, he delivered several simple, quick, highly effective mini-practices to bring up joy in our lives. The overall framework has three steps: 1. Easing into joy: putting the mind in a restful state such that ease and joy positively reinforce one another. Meditation is the cardinal tool here. 2. Inclining the mind toward joy: noticing and appreciating joy that is already available to us. What's good in your life right now? What suffering is absent? 3. Uplifting the mind: focusing on goodness, generosity, loving-kindness and compassion.
The mini-practices are where this book shines. As a meditation teacher, I've noticed that many find the idea of sitting still for 10-20min a day daunting. Well, the mini-practices take just a few seconds, and they can be just as beneficial. Heck, don't take my word for it -- just try these out right now and notice how they make you feel:
• The "3-breath Exercise" is simplicity itself: take one deep, slow breath while you attend to the breath itself; take another breath to relax the body; and take a third to bring up some joy, perhaps with a little half-smile on your face.
• Really notice and savor that first bite of food, that first minute in bed, that first minute under the shower.
• Take 10sec to wish joy for 2 random people.
• Uplift the mind by thinking of someone uplifting, like the Dalai Lama, Buddha, or Nelson Mandela.
The book is lighthearted and easy to read, with many quirky cartoons illustrating Meng's points. If you were to incorporate even a fraction of the techniques Meng describes, you will noticeably increase the amount of joy in your minutes, days and years, and of those around you, too. Treat yourself to Joy on Demand and rejoice!

The central thesis of Joy on Demand is that happiness is trainable through skillful meditation. I highly recommend the book because it delivers on the promise of its title by presenting a clear road map of a sequence of practical mind-training steps that help ease people into an introspective journey of discovery. Moreover, the author's trademark humor and humility belie the elegant logic as well as the textual and scientific underpinnings of his research-based findings and experiential observations.

I also appreciate the open-mindedness and pragmatism that permeate the book: "[T]he paths are not mutually exclusive . . . The thing about the different paths is that each has its own upsides and downsides, so they work much better for some people than others, depending on goals, inclinations, aptitudes, and life situations. For example, the ease and joy path is good at helping large numbers of ordinary people establish a solid practice." Few have the bandwidth to immerse in intensive studies of ancient texts and erudite treatises that are replete with linguistic and interpretive challenges or to attend lengthy meditation retreats. Because the format and content of this entertainingly engaging book are highly accessible (i.e. do not require elucidation by intermediaries) and the approaches conducive to immediate experimentation (e.g. I tried many of the exercises as I read the book), the author's compassionate intention to "benefit the maximum number of people" is bound to bear fruit.

As a novice to Buddhist texts and commentaries who has a keen interest in understanding the role of spiritual practices in technology and innovation driven contemporary society, I found this acknowledgment particularly insightful: "The wisdom and training methods that afforded me this dramatic change in my life trajectory come from the Buddha. In fact, all that is good in me comes from the Buddha and his teachings. I was lost, but now I'm home." The nuggets of wisdom generously sprinkled throughout the book encourage both reflective respite and the exploration of spiritual sanctuaries.

Last but not least, I found great resonance with one of the conclusions: "In any kind of difficult situation, especially one that appears prolonged, I must aspire to have the determination to not give up, and also to cultivate the inner peace, inner joy, and compassion to be at ease as much as possible." The straightforward tips in this primer on mindfulness meditation provided me with not only instructive value but also expanded my positive thought-action repertoire. Adult/High School-Lily Owens, 14, is an emotionally abused white girl living with her cold, uncaring father on a peach farm in rural South Carolina. The memory of her mother, who was accidentally killed in Lily's presence when she was four, haunts her constantly. She has one of her mother's few possessions, a picture of a black Madonna with the words, Tiburon, South Carolina, written on the back. Lily's companion during her sad childhood has been Rosaleen, the black woman hired to care for her. Rosaleen, in a euphoric mood after the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, goes to town to register to vote and insults one of the town's most racist residents. After she is beaten up and hospitalized, Lily decides to rescue her and they go to Tiburon to search for memories of her mother. There they are taken in by three black sisters who are beekeepers producing a line of honey with the Black Madonna label. While racial tensions simmer around them, the women help Lily accept her loss and learn the power of forgiveness. There is a wonderful sense of the strength of female friendship and love throughout the story.

A Heartwarming Read

The Secret Life of Bee's is an enduring story set on a southern bee farm. The characters will enlighten and warm your heart. The Secret Life of Bee's is similar to many southern stories; however, the bee lore that Kidd interjects throughout makes the book unique and interesting. The Secret Life of Bee's is a heartwarming, feel good read. There are universal lessons about family and self throughout.
The main character, Lily Owens is fleeing an abusive father and an all-consuming truth surrounding her mother's death. The Secret Life of Bee's is set in the 1960's when racial tensions and violence were at an all time high. Lily and her caretaker Rosaleen, leave town after a violent encounter with racists while Rosaleen was attempting to exercise some of her newly granted freedoms.
Since the death of her mother, Lilly has a few precious clues as to her last days. The clues lead Lily and Rosaleen to Tiburon, South Carolina where they meet the `calendar sisters', May, June, and August Boatwright. The Boatwright sisters operate a successful Bee farm. Lily and Rosaleen are welcomed to the farm with open arms. Through her work on the farm, Lily is able to examine her past and begin to trust as she finds love again.
The Secret Life of Bee's is the story of mothers. The reader will travel with Lily as she experiences each of the four remarkable women ~ Rosaleen, May, June, and August. Each of these women is a teacher and guide to Lily. It is through her experiences that she is able to discern that a mother is more than just a biological bond.
A great debut for Sue Monk Kidd. I cannot help thinking that I would have loved to learn more about Boatwright sisters...maybe there is room for another story!

I gave this book to my 15 year old daughter to read and she came back after finishing it exclaiming, " All those mothers!" Motherhood and its powerful influence (both good and bad) on each of us is a central theme to the story and the quest for all that a mother implies (safety, acceptance, unconditional love)draws the reader immediately to Lily Owen, the 14 year old narrator. I thought this book had beautiful imagery, a nice balance of goodness overcoming loss, and most of all conceded to the power of redemption. Sue Monk Kidd did a wonderful job weaving the racial tensions of the 1960's into the voice of the main character and bringing us, the reader, along for the ride as the young girl discovers what it feels like to be discriminated against herself, the dangers of racial inequality, and the basic human elements that bind us to each other despite color or class. This story is about a journey of growth and addresses that fundamental need in each of us to find answers to the questions of who we are. I have found, months later, that The Secret Life of Bees is still with me and I recommend it over and over again.

As sweet as honey.

I mean, literally, this book is as sweet as honey, which is spread throughout the book. I now have a whole new appreciation for the work bees do. But while bees and honey may be the back drop to this wonderful story, there is much more. It starts with the painful memory of a young adolescent girl, Lily, who discovers bees in her wall, and these bees and some belongings of her deceased mother lead her on a path of discovery. Lily, as narrator, tells a wonderful joyous and painful story, filled with many life lessons. The ideas that we all have a mother inside of us to be discovered and that life isn't perfect are good reminders. This is a wonderful book, one that is hard to put down. It tugs at one's heart in many ways and Sue Monk Kidd brings the characters to life in a very realistic way.l

I am not from the south and did not run away from home, but I grew up in the 1960s and spent much time in a neighborhood where mothers were very important. Like Lily, I was fortunate to be surrounded by many loving mothers who looked after all the kids on our street. This book reminded me of that time.

I definitely recommend this book

An excellent read

"Embrace your Goddess within." These are the final words of wisdom spoken to the lead character by her teacher and mentor, before the spiritual guide moves on to find her own destiny. "Breath of Life" by Karin Bishop is another very fine effort from an author whose books deal primarily with transgender characters and gender switching. In "Breath of Life" the author explores the world of magic, wizardry and gradual sex change as she did in her book "Fool Moon." This all happens in the context of a classic and powerful battle of good versus evil, resolving itself in a breathtaking conclusion, a kind of clash of the souls. The central theme, as is often the case with this author, is about choices, roads taken, or paths untraveled. Ironically, the protagonist does not really have a choice, as the inner female emerges to become the outer. One wonders if free choice is a complete illusion, or was our destiny completely pre-determined. How the transmogrification of this hero happens has all the beauty of time lapse photography showing a flower emerging from a seed, first becoming a twisting seedling before unfolding the total magnificence of its petals to the world. The author's books have in common their focus on the discovery of the leading character's true nature and sexual identity. "Breath of Life," a sensitive and very well-constructed effort is no exception. An excellent read.

Paranormal Fiction at It's Almost Best

I found this story to be a bit slow starting, while still being interesting. If you stick with it, it starts getting really fast paced and spell binding. I confess I like Wiccan stories. I also like paranormal. The melding of these 2 lines make for an interesting story. My only problem is i can't get to accept a boy changing into a girl though. But, then again, this is fiction, and thank the Goddess it is!

This story is very well written and, despite the strangeness of a boy changing into a girl, it is handled nicely and with feeling. The story flows well and is easy to follow.

Ryan is a young teen who is witness to another student runner falling and ultimately dying. He is near her when she dies and she 'breathes' her spirit into him. Interesting? It surely is. What is even more interesting is the series of events this girls death brings about.

The characters are well written and you can get right into the story as you relate to each of them. I think Ms. Bishop handled the character of Ryan/Grace extremely well and with dignity. As you follow Ryan/Grace, you are led through what it means to be a young lady in an almost wholesome manner.

I do recommend this book for age 16 on up. It is a good read and will keep you riveted from start to finish despite the little bit of slowness to start.

The series has plateaued

Volume 18 picks up with Son Goku stepping into the ring first with Cell and right away I was thinking that something was up. The guy who goes first never wins, and Son Goku’s the hero of the story, so it was an interesting choice of Akira Toriyama’s to open with the unexpected.

And, y’know what, Goku’s fight with Cell is awesome. It’s great, it’s exciting, it’s everything readers of this series have come to expect from Toriyama. So why wasn’t I as engaged as I usually am with Dragon Ball Z?

It comes down to repetition, which is a major factor in this series. It’s a fine line too because some repetition works really well - Cell as the unstoppable villain like Freeza and Vegeta before him, the Strongest Under the Heavens tournament model - but some of the repeated stuff in this book just didn’t click.

Goku suddenly calling a halt in the middle of the fight because he knows he can’t beat Cell, rather than be shocking, felt inevitable and reminded me of the final battle he had with (I think?) Tenshinhan in the original Dragon Ball series. Of course that’s why he went first. Then Cell unleashes a bunch of mini-Cells to fight the rest of the Dragon Ball cast to keep them busy and that felt a lot like Volume 2 of the series when Vegeta sets loose a bunch of monsters.

And then, of course, Son Goku’s son, Gohan, steps in, and you know what’s going to happen: Gohan’s going to beat Cell. It all seems very rote, predictable, and done-before. It’s not that this book is bad, it’s just that at this point, 34 volumes in, we might’ve come to the extent of Toriyama’s invention - he now can’t do anything new and has to go back and redo everything with different characters.

So it’s up to Gohan to defeat Cell and… I don’t really care! You know he’s going to, and then Goku will step back and the series focus will shift to Gohan and blah blah blah. I’ll keep reading of course but this whole Cell story arc has been very weak and it might mark the beginning of the downfall of the series - will it pick up after this or is it all downhill from here? Volume 18 is a decent continuation of the series but nothing overly surprising or special.

I liked it alot

People might wonder how this book went by so fast. Alot of people just love it so much they read it in 15 minutes. I am one of those people. I really enjoyed this manga. I would also get Volumes 19 and 17 just to kind of get more info and finish a great chapter. This book you read pretty fast, but it is very action packed. This basically is a fine work of literary work and the pictures are great! It is Just plain old good!
