Catharine Slade-Brooking has an industry background in branding, packaging and illustration with a client list including Glaxo Smith Kline, Lloyds Bank and the Sunday Times. She has written widely on graphic design subjects including 'The Encyclopedia of Illustration Techniques' and has exhibited work nationally and internationally, from the Mall Galleries in London to the Norsk Farmasihistorisk Museum Oslo.
She has taught within the University sector for over 15 years specializing in branding and visual identity and now teaches on the BA Graphic Communication course at Farnham UCA.

Excellent, practical and most useful resource for anyone involved in any stage or area of branding.

This is essential reading for any brand design student, startup, marketing manager or design professional. It is a thorough, comprehensive introduction and resource from start to finish, but thankfully not a verbosely dense tome. This 160-page guide is primarily a portable, easily accessible textbook with real-world exercises for students or junior account brand managers alike.

Very enjoyable with plenty of international case studies and presentation examples to reinforce points and typical scenarios one would face in the sometimes long, drawn-out journey of crafting a brand identity. Not heavy on process from a design perspective, but brand-centric from throughout, with some encouraging yet realistic words of wisdom (“process is more of a marathon than a sprint, requiring long-term building of brand").

Author Catharine Slade-Brooking, who has plenty of industry experience in branding, packaging and illustration under her belt, outlines eight logical chapters: branding basics, brand anatomy, brand strategy, the design process, research, analysis, concept development and delivering the final design. Slate-Brooking includes many good details to consider (e.g. knowing cultural norms when branding for a country outside of your own), and strategic pointers on how to successfully launch a brand from a creative perspective. Exercises and examples highlight the key activities undertaken by designers to create a successful brand identity, including defining the audience, analysing competitors, creating moodboards, naming brands, designing logos, presenting to clients, rebranding and launching the new identity. Filled with many good visuals throughout (sometimes too small to effectively illustration certain points), there is also a vital smaller section exploring the creative side of developing creative concepts. This guide, filled with many words of experience, is like a trustworthy mentor in book form.

Overall this is an excellent, practical and most useful resource for anyone involved in any stage or area of branding. The up-to-date current content includes every step from client/account relations to creative process to brand management, audits, launches, etc. to successfully launching a brand identity from beginning to end. It doesn’t continue on with what happens after the launch (maintaining and nurturing the brand in the months or years following the launch) but nevertheless, this book is definitely a keeper and very recommended.

About the Author
Heino Engel studied architecture in Germany immediately following the end of World War II, then traveled through Egypt and Arabia, spent more than a year in India, Burma, Malaysia, and Thailand, before arriving in Japan. There, in his own words, he "realized that the Japanese house is as invaluable an experience for the contemporary architect as are the ancient Acropolis of Athens in Greece and the modern high-rise office towers of the United States." He remained in Japan for three years, concentrating on the study of the Japanese house, people, life, language, and culture, and also becoming a member of the Architectural Institute of Japan.

Decent abridgment of a great book

This is a very short abridgment of a fantastic book: The Japanese House: A Tradition for Contemporary Architecture. Though that book is much more expensive, it is worth it if you are actually interested in the construction of a Japanese house. The original is nearly 500 pages, so just about four times longer.

That said, this does provide a decent overview of architectural principles, and an introduction to the philosophy behind Japanese construction. There are also a sizable number of floor plans, though the "250" number on the cover is misleading. The majority of these are tiny variations on the floor plan of a small teahouse, or variations on layout of a single room, and they are printed 14 to a page. (about 1.5 inches square)

After the floor plan section there follow sections on framing, on shoji screens, and on traditional exterior wall construction. These are a decent introduction to the purpose of shoji, but not extensive enough to allow construction of your own solely from this book.

Having read the original, this abridgment is occasionally choppy-sounding and since this book is printed smaller (about 7.5'' x 10'', while the original is 9'' x 11.5'') the pictures are not quite as clear. It is a decent overview of the origins, art and architecture, but is a poor substitution for the more complete version. If all you want is a quick overview in an easy to read package, this may suit your purposes nicely. If you are interested in adding Japanese flair without thorough-going authenticity, this may be perfect. But if you are interested in the details, in authentic reconstruction, or clear plans for everything from flooring to framing to roofing to shoji, doors, and layout, get the original.

Great book: exhaustive, detailed and copiously illustrated

The book, taken from the larger volume "The Japanese House: A Tradition for Contemporary Architecture", describes exhaustively how the traditional Japanese house is built.
Every topic from plan layout down to shoji or tokonoma proportions is covered in detail, with amazing technical drawings and lot of examples: you will be able to build your own Japanese house, from foundation stones to the top of the roof.
Particularly interesting are the schemes of joints needed for every part of the house, and the continuos focus on some particular features like modular order, flexibility or standardization.
If you are not used to technical drawings the book may appear a bit complex, since there are no photos illustrating the building, but everything is very well done.
I recommend this book to everyone with a strong technical interest on Japanese traditional buildings.

"When The 'Ken' Was 1st Applied, Japanese Architechture struck 1 of It's Most destinctive Features: Order

This great book shows the thought process and technique behind traditional Japanese architecture. Whether you are an architect or simply have an interest in the fine details of this process, this book is one of the best. It is filled with over 56 b/w designs, floor plans, joinery and schematics. As this style of building requires a dedicated apprenticeship, people should not necessarily view it as a "how-to" book, even though it does explain the process in fine detail.

There is excellent coverage of measurement, and I especially like the detailed section on tatami layout. The wealth of floor plans alone justify the purchase. There is also 4-pages worth of b/w scrolls, depicting a palace layout (and one frame displaying some high quality calligraphy), and the "architect's scroll" which shows a fairly comprehensive collections of joints. There are numerous joints shown throughout the book, and together with "The Complete Japanese Joinery" and The Art of Japanese Joinery" anyone interested in this subject should be set.

The book describes what the Japanese house is and how it is built. The author argues that the traditional Japanese house seems better suited as a pattern for contemporary housing than any other residential architecture form. He bases this argument of the following distinctive features:

-modular order of system and form
-flexibility of space partition and room function
-compository potential of tatami mats
-expressive diversity within comprehensive standardization
-integrartive qualities of Japanese design

The book presents considerations of the form, system, and detail of space layout, the dimensions and measurements, and how the various components are combined. The book is great for anyone with an appreciation for this form, but the author seems to have clearly geared it towards architects, whom he challenges to explore this form for integration into modern design.

There are few books that cover the process like this, and I highly recommend it. Be sure to Look inside and check out the table of contents to make sure it is what you are looking for, as this is a technical book that is not for everyone.

As a financial professional, I highly recommend this book. It gives some good background which would be useful for any professional in the AML field and it is written in a friendly, practical way. If you are a newcomer to AML field, this is a must, but people who are more experienced in the subject would also benefit from the knowledge. Of course it does not cover everything, but is definitely worth the price.

What I also like are the additional materials available to readers directly from the publisher.

Great Book for Building a Solid Foundation

I found this book to be very insightful and had more practical application then many of the current AML/CTF material available. Whereas much of the published material refurbishes the same abstract principles, Tim Parkman both explains the principles and further illustrates them with concrete examples, case studies, and applications.

Lastly, I appreciated the author's introduction because so often in the industry we get caught up in principles, scenarios, and statistics and forget the underlying human element that the suspicious transactions we review may represent.

This book is informative, colorful and gives the crocheter the tools to make these beautiful afghans! The motifs can also be used to create your own! Totally love the examples, the color schemes and also examples of other colors! There are also yarns that you can use which is helpful! A beautiful, feast for the eyes and will definitely be a great addition to a crafters library! Congrats Amanda on your first published book! Hope to see one on shawls/scarfs and more soon!

The Best Crochet Afghan Pattern Book I've Ever Seen

Beautiful book! Amanda Perkins has wonderful patterns and this book is above and beyond what I expected. The patterns are easy to follow, include charts as well, and the whole book is filled with color and yarn ideas for each afghan. I'm finding it hard to pick what pattern to start with. I highly recommend this book!!

This book is fantastic....as is all of Amanda's work. Amanda's colour sense is brilliant, as well as infectious. As a result, her work focuses on the use of colour rather than lots of complicated stitches and techniques...this book is no exception. Each pattern contains no more than 3 motifs, so even a beginner can start with a blanket containing a single motif. In addition each pattern gives three potential colourways for ideas; the possibilities are endless.

When American planes low on fuel had a choice while searching for the Japanese carriers at Midway, what if their commander had decided to fly to Midway to refuel rather than continue toward the last reported position of the enemy? (All three American carriers might have been sunk and the Japanese would have gone on to neutralize Hawaii and move in on the U.S. West Coast from there.) Other scenarios include a Japanese invasion of Australia (which is eventually defeated), a thrust into British India, an American evacuation of Guadalcanal, a disaster at Leyte Gulf and heavy losses during the invasion of Japan. All " chapters " display author's grasp & understanding of what occurred & what could have happened.

Difficulty with " Alternative History ", is that there is so much room for debate.

However, the most important factor is entertainment.

The What-Ifs of WWII...

The subtitle says the alternate history of how the Japanese won the Pacific War which is not totally true. While many of the chapters deal with their alternate choices, and sometimes just plain good luck, at Pearl Harbor and Midway not all the new pathways have Japan winning the war. Many of the authors are just too honest and some of the end results, while interesting and dramatic, don't bring the Japanese victory. Sometimes it seems to bring them even faster to defeat and death.

It's All Right Here. All of it.

I shouldn't even be writing this review because doing so only creates my competition. I'm writing it for Robert McKee out of respect and love for him as one of the best instructors I've never met. I have both STORY and now, DIALOGUE in hardcover, on my Kindle, and the audio version (he narrates his books) in my headphones. I read it, I listen to it and take it with me when I travel. Sometimes I listen and read at the same time. Most nights I listen to the audio version in my sleep. In other words, I eat, sleep and breathe this book. I did the same thing with Story, his other book. I may go to my grave never fully comprehending the vast wealth of knowledge contained in these two books. That's OK. What I can tell you is this. With nothing but STORY as my guide, my very first screenplay took seven months and thirty-five drafts from start to finish. But. That screenplay became a Hallmark Movies and Mysteries feature film. The producers liked it so much they gave me another assignment. That one took six weeks, and they bought the first draft. I'm now working on my fifth script; this one is in the six-figure category, with five figures upfront just for the Treatment. And I owe it all to everything I've learned from studying Robert McKee, supplemented by what I learned from everyone else. Over the past thirty years, I’ve studied with forty plus instructors and highlighted hundreds of books and listened to dozens of recorded seminars. All that information is summed up and thoroughly explained in Robert McKee's two books STORY and now DIALOGUE. I won't live long enough to absorb everything he teaches. And I still study two hours a day as a warm up for my writing. I’d recommend Aaron Sorkin, Warner Hertzog, William Goldman (both Sorkin and McKee say he's the greatest), Blake Synder, Chris Vogler, Michael Hauge, William Akers, and anybody else you can find who’s willing to share their knowledge. Because you never know when a concept you didn’t realize you didn’t understand or needed is going to show up. Especially when presented from a different perspective. Having said that, if you are serious, and I mean dead serious, about becoming a working screenwriter, or any other kind of fiction writer for that matter, then you have no choice but to study McKee like your literary life depends on it. Buy the hardcover, buy the Kindle version, and buy the audio version of DIALOGUE and STORY. And supplement these two works with any other material that speaks to you. If you do this, you will become a first class screenwriter or novelist or playwright, because all three genres are only different ways of presenting a Story. If you can’t commit to this, unless you’re a genius or prodigy, you’re wasting valuable time which could be spent following your true life calling. But if your heart’s desire is to become a working writer, then sooner or later you’ll have to know everything in McKee’s two books. So, you might as well bite the bullet and jump in head first. It's all right here in STORY and DIALOGUE. All of it. Thank you, Mr. McKee. You, sir, changed my life.-- Jimmy Hager

Read it once in about 3 days, going through the highlights again already, this one is an investment, not a purchase.

Excellent supplement to 'Story' - with examples of speech from popular stories that really drive home the content. It shows how to immerse dialogue into your scene(s) to give the words more meaning, and in a tension-raising-cycle, turn and give the scene itself more impact. I enjoy writing dialogue more with this better perspective of what to look for, and what questions to ask before giving my characters words. This is a book that will get multiple re-reads for reference and increase in understanding as I look to improve my craft and skill-set. Thanks Robert and company!

ONE OF THE TWO BEST BOOKS ON SCREENWRITING

Probably the best book on screenwriting ever (besides Egri), though there is also much here for the novelist and playwright. I am a professional TV writer, of long-standing (35 years), and I can tell you I used this book to figure out how to fix the problems of a complex pilot I'm writing; the author truly " guided me home." And lest you think I'm a McKee sycophant, I am not. I found little in STORY for me. The only thing I disagree with in DIALOGUE is that the author sells his own work short: it isn't just for those who are "lost" in their writing, like me, and the student, it's for anyone who writes fiction for a living, in any form, no matter how much experience they have. It's that good.

I can't say that I'd give this book 5 stars, because I just needed it for a class. It is very simply organized-it's easy to find what you need in a timely manner (such as when taking timed tests online) ;) but that's about it.

If this is the only motor speech book you can afford - buy it!!!

This book is amazing! It has all the information there that you need to confidently assess, diagnose and manage motor speech disorders. It is well set out and allows you to return to specific areas to look things up very easily. The accompanying online learning trains your ear to identify the different types of motor speech disorders. I have learned so much from studying this text which is directly relevant in my work as a speech pathologist with adult acquired communication disorders. My only criticism would be the chapter on psychiatric conditons and motor speech disorders - it really didn't seem to understand the complexities of this area or describe it very well. Otherwise, highly recommended.

Invoking the words and spirit of Thomas Paine, investor-turned-historian John Bogle concedes that his ideas for revamping the mutual-fund industry are perhaps "not yet sufficiently fashionable to procure them general favor." But despite likening the "ills and injustices suffered by mutual fund investors" to those "our forebears suffered under English tyranny," Bogle--founder of the Vanguard Group--makes a strong case for index funds with this exhaustive study of investing.

He begins with primer-like essays on investment strategy, championing mutual funds for their inherent investment value, and then grinding each point home with a bevy of graphs, charts, entertaining anecdotes, and common sense. He repeatedly stresses time as a basic tenet for investing, listing these simple rules: "Time is your friend"; "Impulse is your enemy"; "Stay the course." And then he proceeds to blast fund managers, who have become marketers rather than managers. The trade-off between the profits that accrue to fund shareholders and the profits that accrue to the fund management companies seems subject to no effective independent watchdog or balance wheel, despite the fact that the shareholders actually own the mutual funds. It's an interesting concept: smart, reasoned investors can all but secure their financial future, but the system itself, run unchecked by fund managers, needs a major overhaul. A Buy Buy Buy

Although I have investment experience , I really enjoyed book and have recommended it to folks
that don't have a clue when it comes investing in the stock market. But this book may be a bit too much for them.

Instead it may be a more appropriate read to those with some investment experience.

However, John Boggle really is a revolutionary when it comes deconstructing the myths of investing.

And thats critical because the industry is designed to make investing confusing and complicated. Hence people thinki they
need an investment advisor to guide them. Unless you have very complicated portfolio, index or passive investing in time, is
a winning proposition when it comes to participating in an amazing wealth generating program.

The fact of the matter is less 5% of all active money management manager beet the market. The question is.. if you don't know who the 5% of professional are who beat the market , you're going to spend time and money on people that can't beat index investing.

Boggle is truly a visionary and had to take a lot of heat from the industry stating that his system of indexing is never going to build a portfolio large enough to make difference in one's financing future.

Fortunately he has proven all of the naysayers wrong.

You may have to read certain sections twice or so yet if you want to be in the stock market, you can pick up
the basic concepts and general terms to begin taking control of your financial future.

Do it yourself, don't hire a financial advisor

People say that investing is complex and confusing and that you need to hire a financial advisor to help you on investing your money for a comfortable retirement. After reading this book, I found that much of what you hear from the financial industry is wrong and is designed to confuse the retail investor. The truth of the matter is that investing your money is not complex and that you do not need a financial advisor. If you listen and follow the advise from much of the professional investor class about where you should put your money, you would be making them rich at the expense of your savings. John Bogle is doing us retail investor's much needed truth about how to manage your money and has the roadmap and proof to tell us, what most others in the industry has long kept silent and a secret. The truth to investing is that it is not secret, do it yourself, it is not complex, and don't listen to the advise of professional portfolio managers who are out to take your money while pretending to have your back, they don't because it is at their expense. Go with Bogle's folly, read the book, and follow the wisdom in it, and you will do better than 96% of all funds managed by the portfolio managers.

sometimes simplicity must be exhaustively explained to be believed

this is *the* book to read on mutual funds. it's a hefty tome coming in at 600+ pages, but fear not. this book does not read like a dry financial report. bogle is opinionated and his writing flourishes with reminders of his personality amidst the endless but important charts and tables. to spice things up, bogle makes references to a wide variety of sources including shakespeare, thomas paine, scripture and even hegel! by the time you're done, you'll know *everything* you've ever wanted to know (and more) about the mutual fund industry, all straight from the founder of the vanguard group himself. for those afraid of the size of this book, perhaps check out bogle's "little book of common sense investing" instead and then come back to this book if you want more details.

bogle's main message is that costs do matter and simplicity is the best way to avoid costs. the recommendation is to buy low cost broad-based index funds that will outperform the vast majority of actively managed mutual funds in the long run. notice by the definition of "average" that the average investor will get average market returns minus fees and taxes. notice the low cost broad-based index fund gets average market returns minus *minimized* fees and taxes. the index investor will thus outperform the average investor in actively managed mutual funds given all the extra costs associated with active management. also notice that the margin of victory from indexing will compound over the years and will lead to an even greater index fund performance in the long run. that's the gist of why indexing works. if you're not convinced, read bogle's book!

even if you've already read some of the other great passive investing books espousing the virtues of indexing, you still owe it to yourself to read at least one of bogle's books. "common sense on mutual funds" is both readable as well as comprehensive, and would be a good addition to your library. burton malkiel, rick ferri, william bernstein, larry swedroe and others have all written excellent books on the subject as well, but they also hold differing opinions on the specifics, so read all of these authors! i was already convinced on indexing after first reading malkiel's book, but continued reading more on passive investing to work out all the details. these books as a whole help reinforce the main ideas while also exposing the reader to the authors' differences in perspectives, thus building confidence in the reader to think and succeed as an independent d.i.y. investor.

of particular interest to me was the issue of small-cap value tilting. i was ambivalent on this practice, but bogle's book convinced me to *not* small-cap value tilt. readers who already know what small-cap value tilting is should feel free to skip to the next paragraph. now, for those unfamiliar with the terminology, stocks are divided according to size (small-cap, mid-cap, large-cap) as well as style (value, blend, growth). the size refers to the company's size as measured by its market capitalization, i.e. the number of shares multiplied by the price per share. the style is another way to partition stocks according to certain numbers such as price/book ratios and dividend yields; there's no agreed upon standard that's universally accepted for what constitutes a value/blend/growth stock. informally, you could think of value stocks as those that are not currently favored by the market for whatever reason. at the opposite extreme, growth stocks are "hot" stocks that scream potential. blend stocks are in between value and growth. given 3 sizes and 3 styles, there are thus 9 size-style combinations. according to research done by professors fama and french, small-cap value stocks significantly outperform the other 8 size-style combinations in the long run. the problem is, small-cap value stocks make up about 3% of the total stock market. small-cap value tilting means overloading on small-cap value stocks to try to capture the bonus identified in the fama/french research, but that also means underweighting 97% of the total market and potentially missing out if the other 8 size-style combinations outperform small-cap value. you see the dilemma.

bogle's repeated message of simplicity, as well as his emphasis on reversion to the mean, ultimately convinced me to resist the temptation of small-cap value tilting. bogle's unwavering conviction in the simple serves as a necessary component in the chorus of voices, helping to guide your investment decisions, even on the more esoteric matters. and although the message of simplicity is easily stated, i am glad bogle wrote a comprehensive text because the details illustrating the majesty of simplicity is what finally settled the small-cap value tilting question for me.

this book's huge size and scope definitely has its drawbacks, not the least of which is the sheer intimidation factor. nevertheless, i believe this book does serve a useful role in the catalog of passive investing, and bogle was the only one who could've written it.
