Reverse Returns - Gifts from Craft Pros to Homebrewers and Neat Brewery Bios to Boot!

Many homebrewers gravitate to professional brewing and build new recipes (grists in the jargon with unique hopping regimes). Now those turned pro are reversing the education - giving back to their former fellow homebrewers. This book covers about 38 now "classic" craft beers and how to brew them at home. From brewers as well known as Tallgrass, Epic, Lagunitas, August Schell, Shmaltz, Allagash, Odell, Cigar City, Blue Mountain, Stone, Rogue, Troegs and Avery and more (many of whom we know take quality and analyses of the beers they make very seriously) – these guys are now graciously giving away the farm (paying it forward in modern parlance) with their secret recipes.

There have been “brew beers like you buy before” but the new generation books (beyond the classic “The Complete Joy of Homebrewing”) are written by the brewers themselves – or at least as edited by Mr. Agnew. So first-hand accounts (extract efficiencies and hop utilization factors included!) for both liquid extract and all grain versions standardized to 5 gallon batches of these 38 beers ranging with styles from Pale Ales, IPA’s, Porters, Stouts, Wheats and Ryes, Belgian and Specialty and Lagers (the latter – 3 lagers worth looking at from the viewpoint of the difficulty in making them and the need to support a customer base who love this style of beer).

Featuring profiles of the Breweries and many of the Brewers with a nice spread of full color plates I’d imagine other professional brewers and “want to become pro brewers” will also peek into this book. Likely a “should be on every –serious - homebrewers shelf” too. For me a nice find to discover more about my own clients and favorite brewers.

This is one of the coolest brewing books I've ever seen

Absolutely awesome. I bought this book with no knowledge about it other than it had the 8 bit pale ale recipe in it. What I got was not at all what I expected. This is basically a homebrewers coffee table book. Beautiful pictures, excellent descriptions and tons of killer pro brewer recipes. This is one of the coolest brewing books I've ever seen

So happy I found this book! I have been a home brewer for a year, so I am still a newbie! I have also found that it isn't always easy to find good and proven recipes. I have read most of the book and enjoy the little stories about the breweries, many of which I have the good fortune to have either visited or been able to taste their craft beers. I am so grateful that these wonderful brewers wanted to share their basic recipes! I truly appreciate being able to produce a facsimile in my own home! Yay! My first brew is currently in its second fermentation and I used the Allagash Black recipe. If you are a home brewer, I highly recommend this book!

An Excellent Help in Understanding Isaiah

Dr. Smith is one of the finest Old Testament scholars in the United States and his expertise in Old Testament prophets shines through these two volumes. The great contribution he makes is in helping the student to understand not only the social context(s) of Isaiah but also how the prophet tried to communicate a message to his audience in such a way that it would transform them.

Brilliant exegetical and theological commentary

It's sad that there seem to be very few who have interacted with Prof. G. Smith on Isaiah. The two volumes are rich in theological exposition, as Smith takes time to reflect on the given passage theologically. He begins each section with a general introduction, a discussion of its genre, historical setting, structure and theological analysis. His exegesis is detailed and sound. Excellent for in-depth study and preaching purposes. Students and pastors will greatly benefit. Oswalt or Smith? both but I rank Smith first.

About the Author

Younes Shabany received his BS in mechanical engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, in 1991. He then went to Vancouver, Canada where he obtained his MS in mechanical engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1994. He came to the United States and received a Ph.D in mechanical engineering with a minor in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University, California, in 1999. Dr. Shabany has over 18 years of experience in thermal-fluid engineering. He is currently Director of Thermal Engineering & Design and Thermal Architect in Advanced Technology Group at Flextronics International USA, Milpitas, California. In this position, he has been leading thermal design activities in Flextronics’ worldwide design centers on a variety of infrastructure, computing, consumer, automobile, medical, and power electronic products. Before Flextronics, he worked for Applied Thermal Technologies, Santa Clara, California, where he was the director for two years. While at Applied Thermal Technologies, he worked with over 60 companies and designed thermal solutions for about as many pieces of electronic equipment including telecom and networking equipment, desktop and laptop computers, biomedical equipment, and consumer products. Dr. Shabany has also been a lecturer at San Jose State University, California, since the summer of 2001. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in heat transfer and advanced mathematical analysis including his most favorite course, Heat Transfer in Electronics. He has also advised graduate students on their projects and theses.

Good Textbook

As an electrical engineering students required to take a heat transfer class, this book did the job. I took the course with the author as the professor, and I thought that this book for the most part is concise and highlights the points which engineers need to know.

Some of the later chapters seem slightly less polished. There were also some typos, but I suppose it is not the first time I have run into typos in a textbook. Overall, this book was refreshingly to-the-point compared to some of the other engineering texts I have encountered so far. An added bonus is the form factor, it's about half the size of a regular textbook which makes it easy to bring around.

Heat Transfer - Thermal management of electonics

This book is very well written, with the necessary theory and realistic examples of many different heat transfer techniques that really helps a packaging engineer to do his job correctly. The author has a thorough understanding of heat transfer and knows how to explain this in a good way.
The only thing I miss is the answers to the exercises, in order to see if I have found the correct answeer.
A great book that I would use in undergraduate teaching if was giving such a course !!!

This book is a game changer for your health

My thoughts are that the material in this book truly leads us to shift our thinking about how we look at our health and illness, and REMEMBER the body's innate ability to help heal itself. It contains a wealth of information, as well as practical approaches for you to develop your own personal approach to your health and happiness. I would go so far as to suggest that this book should form part of a curriculum for students from early ages where subconscious beliefs and programming are first formed, right through to medical school. Anyone diagnosed with a health condition, anyone "worried" that they might be predisposed to a condition, or anyone simply looking to maintain their existing good health can benefit from reading this book.

Meditations on Medication

It's never too late to change your perspective on what health and wellness means. If you read this book today, get ready for some incredible revelations. The information Dr. Rankins presents may not all be new news, but its powerfully expressed and the time is right. People, like myself and most likely anyone reading this, are searching for answers on how to live healthy and simply. The answer of course is that we have everything we need inside us it just takes an eloquent author to tell us that! A book that has helped me realize the power of self-expression to self-heal is Art and Healing by Barbara Ganim.

What makes Mind Over Medicine so different from the other books is that she provides information that is grounded in scientific study from mainstream medical journals in accessible language. She challenges the Western medicine culture without disparaging it. Instead, she advocates the power of positive thinking, proactive self-care, and seeing wellness with an open mind. I wish there was an index, but she organizes her case well into three sections:

1) Evidence of mind-body connection
2) Areas in the body where the mind can create healing, which includes the real physiology/mechanics of what goes on in the body
3) Methods to change your belief systems and habits to a personal health prescription

Life-Changing Book--Everything You Want To Know About Mind-Body Medicine Without The "Woo-Woo"

This cutting-edge book is unique in its mission--the author (a conventional medical doctor who has left her mainstream practice in order to assist people in healing holistically) has wildly succeeded in her attempt to prove scientifically that in so many ways we can heal ourselves. The book is unique because its approach is not woo-woo or only anecdotally-based, but grounded in science and in studies from mainline medical journals. This is not an academic or scholarly book, however; it is accessible for any reader and will especially appeal to those who want concrete ways based on sound medical research to embark upon their own healing, even if they are staying within conventional (allopathic) medicine.

The book is endorsed by Christiane Northrup, MD; life coach Martha Beck; Bernie Siegel, MD; shame researcher Brene Brown, PhD; Larry Dossey, MD; and others such as Anita Moorjani, Danielle Laporte, SARK, and Chris Guillebeau. If you like and respect these authors, you will most certainly enjoy this book immensely.

The author has developed a new wellness model that she has details in the last part of the book. Her talents as a physician and a type of life coach have merged in this model. It looks to be very useful. Just from working through it in the book, the reader can develop her/his own personal health plan.

The author does not disparage conventional doctors or allopathic medicine even when she points out their flaws, but advocates that all practitioners work together as part of the patients' health care team.

Some topics covered include: meditation, current research on optimism and happiness, workaholism, community, spontaneous remission, the placebo effect, the nocebo effect, limiting beliefs, and so much more. These are not the same things you've read everywhere else, either--if you care about this area of study and are a healer, you will want to own this book.

The book can be useful to those who are struggling with illness (as the author herself did), those who are well, practicing medical professionals (ah, if only more would read this!), and those who work with mind-body interactions (which should be all healers of any type). I especially recommend it to readers like myself who are life coaches working with advanced mind-body tools who want an accessible explanation for why their modality works--who want an explanation of how--exactly--the mind creates emotions--the book is worth it for that information alone.

The only way I can think of that this book could be improved upon is if it had an index...though my copy is highlighted and self-indexed with notes, and I have a feeling that yours will be the same!

Add it to your collection, however, it has it's shortcomings. The author is defintly knowledgeable about his subject, however the presentation of the material could be better. The book reads like a compilation of magazine articles at times. If you have a good collection of VW Trends & Hot VW's magazines, you probably don't need this book. The author is also from the UK, so there are references to items, that if you are in the USA, may not be practical (i.e. brakes from a Horizon Talbot or something like that). He presents alot of options on various topics, but never really tells you what product "in reality" is the best (pros/cons). He also does not really get into true suspension tuning. Things are left pretty loose (i.e. adding an anti-sway bar will improve handling)....Well, as a race driver myself I could disagree with this statement in certain cases. He does not outline, basic vehicle dynamics tunings. Example: He does not say that Stiffening the rear of the car increases oversteer, and stiffing the front increases understeer. Let alone define under/over steer. The affect of tire pressures, alignment, etc. These TRUELY "tuning for High-Performance" items are either left out or glossed over.
Unless, you need a good reference on Brake "Options", or how to shorten you chasis for kit cars or Baja's, spend your money on "Keith Seume's book on Volkswagen Bug Performance". If you already own Keith's Performance book, you probably don't need this book.
Stongest Point: R&Ring King and Link Pins, Ball Joints, basic maintenance on the supspension.
If the book were titles "VW Suspension Maintenence and Options" I would have rated it a 4. The "high performance" angle despite the many brake options is misleading.

Dominique Lapierre was one of the pioneers of the subjective news story, a man who was never afraid to put himself, both physically and emotionally, at the heart of his reports. It is a style that has often been imitated, but as A Thousand Suns shows, it has seldom been bettered. In 1944, Lapierre won his own footnote in history by misdirecting the German tanks and accelerating the liberation of Paris by two days. You could argue that ever since, he has been making sure that other people get the credit they deserve.

A Thousand Suns is both a personal memoir and a testament to the notable characters Lapierre met along the way, from the great and the good, such as Mother Teresa, to the infamous (such as Caryl Chessman, who was executed in San Quentin in 1960), to the more anonymous. Throughout, Lapierre is always looking for the personal details that make the stories come alive. And he finds them. He discovers that General von Choltitz, the Nazi in charge of occupied Paris, had had an overcoat made in the summer of 1944 "because he thought it would be cold in a POW camp." Kozo Okamato, the only surviving Red Army Faction (RAF) member to bomb Lod airport, tells him he became a terrorist after being dumped twice by girlfriends. "At the time the RAF seemed a less demanding lover." These are the insights that animate Lapierre's work, and he is never afraid to find the humanity in even the most apparently evil of people.

However, this tendency is both a virtue and his undoing, as Lapierre sometimes allows his obvious affection for his subject to cloud all judgment. An example can be found in his accounts of Lord Mountbatten of Burma. Mountbatten was a known charmer, but his record on the partition of India does not bear scrutiny. His fudging of the boundaries, and the speed with which he acted, was undoubtedly a significant factor in the mass bloodshed that followed. Lapierre lets him off the hook with a single sentence: "By extricating his country from the Indian wasps' nest without spilling a drop of British blood, Mountbatten had saved Great Britain from one of those colonial wars of which France had made a speciality." Even for a partisan observer, this simply will not do. But a journalist who cares too much is always preferable to one who doesn't care at all, and Lapierre especially so, for the range and depth of his reportage, if nothing else. He harks back to a more innocent age when public figures were more open and trusting; few journalists would get anything like the access to equivalent figures today. Enjoy him, warts and all. Many of these movers and shakers are people he interviewed and highlighted in his previous bestselling books. Some of them fit awkwardly into the narrative's overall heroic mold: Spanish bullfighter Manuel Benites El Cordobes brings out Lapierre's corny side; Nazi general Dietrich von Choltitz, who refused to carry out Hitler's orders to raze Paris, was, as Lapierre notes, unaware of the imminent arrival of reinforcements. But we do get real heroes, including Mahatma Gandhi, Raphael Matta (a Parisian businessman who became an African game reserve warden and was eventually murdered by poachers) and Ehud Avriel (the refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria who helped engineer the clandestine mass immigration of European Jews to the fledgling state of Israel). Though long-winded at times, Lapierre tells incredible tales of true-life adventure, and he is a valuable eyewitness to history, whether he is joining castaways in the mass exodus of Algeria's French population following that colony's independence or making an unprecedented automobile trip across the USSR in 1956. An intriguing, albeit subjective, look at some of this century's most interesting people. Lapierre (The City of Joy, 1985, etc.) has had the writing gig of the century. As a reporter for Paris Match, among other periodicals, he has traveled the world and chronicled some seminal historical moments. Here he recounts meetings with everyone from Mother Teresa to Mahatma Gandhi. Particularly rivetingand grippingly writtenis a chapter on the last days of death-row inmate Caryl Chessman, who insisted on his innocence to his dying breath. Lapierre interviews Chessman six times and records firsthand each last-ditch effort to save the man, who eluded execution eight times in 12 years. The California judge's call to stay the execution one last time reached the prison five seconds after the cyanide pills had been dropped into the sulfuric acid. Interspersed with the ``interviews'' is Lapierre's own story, which raises this quibble: The book seems a tad self-serving at times. Was the famous bullfighter El Cordobes really a vital 20th-century figureone of the ``thousand suns'' referred to in the Indian proverb from which the book derives its titleor is he a convenient, albeit fascinating, means to remind the reader that Lapierre and Larry Collins wrote a book (Or I'll Dress You in Mourning) based on their Reader's Digest profile of the Spaniard? Still, the book is lively and Lapierre a terrific tour guide. Besides, it's hard to dislike an author who has used millions of dollars in book royalties to help bring medical care to desperately indigent people in Calcutta, a point Lapierre carefully annotates in an appendix that outlines the work he has accomplished there and in the Ganges Delta before giving addresses for readers who want to make donations. Make Your Hobby Your Profession ! ! ! ! ! ! !

1. 'A Thousand Suns', a fascinating book by Dominique Lapierre, famous author of books like `Is Paris Burning' and `City of Joy' takes its title from and Indian proverb that the author chanced upon during his stay in South India. It comes from (as indicated by the author) "Behind every cloud, there are a thousand suns". A perfect message for life in present day's gloomy outlook of life.

2. It goes without saying that the book, which has such a beautiful and motivating title ought to be full of life energy and epitomize everything that is the very essence of meaningful life. This book actually is a byproduct, but a beautiful and useful one. It consists of 15 independent well researched real life stories, which the author encountered in the run up to doing a specific assignment mainly related to the prime characters or places related to these stories, initially as a news correspondent and later as a writer.

3. At the end thus, he filed his reports / wrote his books, but the enduring beauty of life enshrined in the background of these reports / books remained. The author has really done a wonderful service to mankind by writing this book; else such beautiful pearls of human endeavor, wisdom, perseverance and enterprise would have been lost forever.

4. Written in a simple style with stress on delivering the message right, the author might have not achieved perfection of narrative, but what needed to be achieved i.e. delivery of the essentials of beauty of life has been achieved with perfection.

5. It is rightly said that `make your hobby your profession and you would not have to work for a day'. It is evident from reading this book that Mr Lapierre seems to have not worked for a day but have thoroughly enjoyed this life following his passion for writing.

6. All those who have faith in life and mankind and all those whose faith on these is wavering for some reasons must read this book to derive the requisite benefit.

A rivetting, if not accurate, read

This dude knows how to write. Throughout the book, his passion, respect and sometimes joy as he describes life's adventures and the amazing people he has met permeate his writing. He brings the events to life, makes them very real.
In particular, his horrific account of the death of Caryl Chessman brought tears to my eyes. How could it be that in a so-called civilised country such deaths continue? I was outraged and appalled to learn from Lapierre that of the 500 death executions since 1977, 'seventy-five concerned men and women whose innocence was proven after their death.' 75 innocent people killed! Mon dieu! Er no, actually -- I've since found out from various anti-death penalty web sites that in fact 75 (or now around 85) people were released (ALIVE) from death row after their innocence was proven. The distinction, I think, is rather important!
He also claims that 'California has remained faithful to its gas chambers' as a manner of execution. As far as I could find out from various government and anti-death penalty web sites, California uses primarily, if not solely, lethal injection to dispose of its unwanted citizens.
Lapierre's account of 'tarantulas as hairy as apes' in Africa would excite ecologists -- who perhaps foolishly think wild tarantulas exist only in the Americas -- as much as his (unfortunately mistaken) sighting of a rhinoceros excited his host in the Ivory Coast.
Characterising Mohatma Gandhi with temporal accuracy, if somewhat dismissively, as 'an elderly half-naked Indian...living in poverty' no doubt adds credence to his amazement at the 'miraculous alchemy' and mutual understanding that existed between Gandhi and Lord Mountbatten. But is it really so miraculous when one considers that the middle-class Gandhi had studied for and received a law degree from London University and practiced as a barrister in South Africa for 20 years? Is it so miraculous that two educated men with experience in and a good understanding of each other's cultures could then understand each other?
Obviously any account of events is going to carry some subjectivity, like his rather derogatory characterisation of Gandhi, but it's disturbing when things presented as facts, like the huge number of innocent death row victims, are blatantly incorrect. It made me wonder how many other factual errors I'd inadvertantly absorbed as truth.
Nevertheless, it is great read, lively and interesting, and his contribution to the welfare of the poorest of the poor in India goes beyond admirable. Just take the 'facts' with a grain of salt!

a must for anyone who has ever read a Lapierre book!

This wonderful series of adventures and relationships brings the reader into the fascinating world of Dominique Lapierre. He carries us back through his many and widely varied "assignments" as a journalist and author over the last 50 +years. Dominique and his wife shared many of the experiences .He makes you feel he is talking directly to you and sharing feelings that are close to his heart. Anyone who has ever read "City of Joy" and was moved by the story of Calcutta slums will really be interested in the background stories he provides which lead the writing of the book. I was only familiar with the author through his "City of Joy" book but after finishing "A Thousand Suns" I am anxious to read his other books. Longtime fans of the author will certainly relish this latest addition to their Lapierre library but anyone reading these stories will be caught up in the author's ability to evoke a sense of hope in seemingly hopeless situations.
