The editors, both former students of Lynch, provide a cogent summary of his career and of the role he played in shaping and transforming the American urban design profession during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Each of the seven groups of writings and projects that follow begins with a short introduction explaining their thematic content and their background. The essays in part I focus on the premises of Lynch's work. his novel reading of large-scale built environments and the notion that the design of an urban landscape should be as meaningful and intimate as the natural landscape. Next, excerpts from Lynch's travel journals reveal his early ideas on how people perceive and interpret their surroundings, ideas that culminated in his seminal work "The Image of the City. This part of the book also presents Lynch's experiments with children and his assessment of environmental-perception research. The examples of both smallscale and large-scale analysis of visual form in part III are followed by three parts on city design. These include Lynch's more theoretical works on complexplanning decisions involving both functional (spatial and structural organization) and normative (how the city works in human terms) approaches, articles discussing the principles that guided Lynchs teaching and practice of city design, and descriptions of Lynch's own projects in the Boston area and elsewhere. The book concludes with essays written late in Lynch's career, fantasy pieces on utopias and offering new design freedoms and scenarios warning of horrifying "cacotopias" to come. Kevin Lynch (1918-1984) studied with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin and later obtained a Bachelor of City Planning degree from MIT. After a long and distinguished career on the faculty of the MIT School of Architecture and Urban Planning, he was named Professor Emeritus of City Planning. Tridib Banerjee is Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Southern California. Michael Southworth is a Professor of Urban Design and Environmental Planning at the University of California at Berkeley.

Transnational thoughts from a human geographer & Latino Veteran of U.S. Army

Lynch (1918-1984), was born in Chicago, IL, raised in NC, and later educated under the tutorage of Frank Lloyd Wright, before leaving to serve overseas with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the Pacific/Southeast Asian Region during World War II (WWII) and returned home to complete undergraduate studies at MIT, served as an urban planner (working in Greensboro, NC), then was asked to return to MIT as a professor. Thus, his work was instrumental in transforming some of the greatest scientific minds when universities in the U.S. accepted professors without doctoral degrees. With this in mind, some of our universities are failing students because they insist on ignoring the experiential knowledge of veterans that served overseas and gained insight into both the destruction of landscapes and reconstruction of urban centers which suffered from catastrophic situations. Working in Latin America and the Pacific-Asian Region of the world in the second half of the twentieth century, Lynch provided both applied and theoretical designs which exist in this book and I recommend it for those interested in geography, landscape architecture, regional planning, and urban development.

Michael Southworth and Tridib Banerjee, former students of Kevin Lynch at MIT's School of Urban Studies and Planning, have organized a brilliant collection of most of Lynch's works. Here we can find his seminal ideas pointed out trough his researches in the field of environmental perception, as well as his urban design projects. The book still presents a good biography of Lynch and serves as a very interesting complement to the books that this fundamental author wrote. It is an extremely important work both to architectural and urban design students as well as to professionals and researches.

Excellent ABA Manual - Written with both parents and ABA professionals in mind

We were referred to this book when we'd asked an experienced ABA therapist if there was a "how to" manual out there that listed what had been taught to the children in the original UCLA Young Autism Project. While this book doesn't list granular specifics of the UCLA study, nor is it affiliated with it (one of the authors played a significant role in the study however, John McEachin), it does list out which ABA programs should be taught to a child on the Spectrum and more importantly, it lists the sequence in which those programs should be taught. Many of the programs detailed lead into, or are pre-requisites for, programs that are taught later on in the book. The book is really useful and well worth the money for multiple reasons. It can be referenced and easily comprehended by parents, who want to implement some of the ABA programs themselves, and also, it can be leveraged by parents so that they can ask informed questions of their professional ABA provider. In addition to providing an ABA curriculum, the book also discusses disruptive behaviors, self-stimulatory behaviors, sleep problems and toilet training; all of which are explained in chapters that are well written and easy to comprehend. There's a reason that this book is one of the biggest sellers in the Autism community.

Life Changing!

This book is life changing!!! As a parent of a 4-year-old daughter with Autism - I have read this book and all of the books by these authors - they are invaluable - they give you the tools you need to teach your child, understand the process, and communicate with your childs' therapists. ABA is the only research proven method out there and it is a shame that more people aren't aware of the resources they should be using. School districts often provide minimal eclectic programs that are ineffective. Regional centers notoriously lie about services your child needs or qualifies to recieve - these are the first people I've worked with - attended their workshops- and learned their ABA - that get it right - if only everyone had the opportunity to learn from them - more kids would make better progress. This is powerful teaching and learning - I've worked at Harvard Business Schools' Executive Education Programs and I've seen a variety of teaching in my life thus far - this stuff works!

Just what I needed

Right after I got the autism diagnosis for my son I realized that behavioral therapy would be our main focus of treatment and due to financial constraints, I would be the primary therapist.

After reading some really heady and intellectual literature on behavioral therapy I just wanted to scream, "Yes, I know, but tell me what to do!!"

A Work in Progress does just that. It is simply written and easy to use. Look up the behavior you wish to address in the table of contents, turn to the indicated page, and there, clearly written is a step-by-step plan. Brilliant. Just what we needed.

According to London-based journalist Aburish, his is the 28th biography of Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970). The statistic says much about the appeal of the Egyptian colonel who forced out King Farouk yet failed to modernize an unwilling nation that adored him. Nasser evicted Britain from Suez and funded the Aswan Dam, but, Aburish concedes, could not lead Egypt out of backwardness, corruption and Islamic extremism. This biography has more politics than life in it, and much repetitive and often contradictory history. Once Nasser joins with dissident fellow officers whom he quickly co-opts, the reader learns little more than that he was always a good husband and father, spurned corruption and suffered early on from the heart trouble and diabetes that killed him at 52. Aburish mourns the lost potential of the man he sees as the greatest figure in the region since Saladin, but acknowledges that the inability to delegate authority to anyone not an incompetent and thus likely to unseat him left Nasser unable to achieve real change. The book attempts to explain Nasser's contradictions regarding relations with America (and the CIA), Russia, Israel and his Arab neighbors, but Aburish is unable to persuade even himself. At one point, for example, Nasser's "heir apparent" Zakkaria Mohieddine quarreled with him "and never saw Nasser again," but 15 pages later he is named prime minister "and seldom met his leader alone." Also marred by a propensity for triteness, this biography is unlikely to appeal to readers beyond those who are fixated on Middle Eastern political turmoil. 8 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW.

As a result of Gamal Abdel Nasser's popularity within Arab societies, more than a dozen biographies of him have been published. Aburish contributes to them with the advantage of a three-decade's perspective since Nasser's death in 1970, marked by the sympathetic author's frank wrestling with Nasser's political and military failures. Besides construction of the Aswan Dam and possession of the Suez Canal, Nasser left Egypt a mostly rhetorical legacy of Arab dignity through unity. A biographer of several twentieth-century Arab figures (e.g., Arafat, 1998), Aburish presents Nasser's beginnings as a military officer and leader in the 1952 overthrow of the monarchy. Acknowledging him as an orator nonpareil of anticolonialism (sealed by his survival of the 1956 Suez crisis), Aburish closely critiques the difficulties Nasser encountered in translating his sway with the street into successful projects, such as the short-lived merger with Syria. In hindsight, nothing worked; Nasser's Islamist enemies inherited his mantle as champion of pan-Arab nationalism, the complexities of which Aburish, an intellectual moderate, handles adroitly and insightfully. Nasser: The Last Pan-Arab

It seems few people know of Gamel Abdel Nasser these days. Yet, in this life time, he was one of the world's most influencial men; certainally one of the most powerful in the Middle East. Nasser, perhaps more than anyone in recent history, changed a nation and altered the course of history for a region. He was able to bring great changes to Egypt and great harm. He set the stage for the many Arab wars inflicted on Israel, and is partly to blame for the tragedy of the Palestinian People. He also brought Egypt from a backwards country, without a electrial power and infrastructure in many parts of the country to a modern developed nation while overthrowing an inept and corrupt monarchy controlled by a colonial power. And he inspired a new sense of confidence, not just in Egypt, but in the entire Arab World.

It was Nasser's dream to create a united Arab nation; one that superceded religious division which mares the Middle East today, but one that united its peoples to create a superpower capable of matching the economic and military might of an emerging unified Europe, China, the USSR and America. His polictial policies help create the Non-Aligned League, along with India's Nehru and Yugoslavia's Tito which played the superpowers the way they attempted to play lesser nations.

The book is very well written, though there are a few minor grammatical errors due to translation, Nevertheless, they take nothing away from this outstanding book. This 311 page book would be great for anyone interested in World or Middle Eastern history, as well the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Moslem World, the Cold War, military history, or just wants to understand the background of how we got where we are today in the Near East."Nasser: The Last Arab" is, in the end, a fascinating story of a brilliant and yet flawed man who rose from obscurity to dominate an region and just as quickly, fell from power and in the process became a modern legend.

A very insightful read into the Nasser and the history of the Middle East in the 20th century

Aburish's biography about Nasser provides a thorough examination of the former president's life, as well as the overall chain of events that took place in the Middle East throughout the 20th century. The book starts with a brief background of Egypt prior to Nasser, and then discusses his ascent to power and the aftermath. Although opinionated, Aburish delves into issues that are rarely discussed and largely unknown to the general public, from Nasser's close relationship to JFK to his secret talks with Israel in the 1950's. In addition, Aburish paints a vivid picture of Nasser's personality, which essentially provides the reader with a picture of not just who he was as a leader, but who he was as a father, husband, and just an ordinary Egyptian man. This book is an important read for anyone interested in one of the most important Arab figures in history, and provides a brief history of the major events that have taken place in the Middle East in the past century and the impact they have had on the United States, Europe, and the citizens of the Arab world.

The story of the popular incompetent Arab leader

This is one of the objective biographies about late Egyptian President and Arab leader Gamal Abdul-Nasser. Even though Said Aburish expresses his admiration of Nasser toward the beginning of the book, a statement which warns the reader of a biased account in favor of Nasser, the book eventually proves to be otherwise.

According to Aburish, Nasser was a popular leader only and had no vision, platform or plan for the Arab world. Aburish correctly argues that Nasser had two positive sides only to his leadership: The first is that Nasser was never corrupt and the second is that his dictatorship depended mostly on his charisma.

Nasser didn't live a luxurious life or eliminate his earlier comrades after he took over the Egyptian rule. Nasser's single-mindedness in decision-making, however, dominated his leadership. This rare influence depended on an undisputed leadership drawing mainly on Nasser's popularity and charisma.

Through a narration covering Nasser's life since his early days, Aburish leaves then his reader to judge whether an incompetent popular leader with no platform was needed at that period of Arab history or not.

The book is also a good read for all those who are interested in exploring the history of Egypt and the Arab world between the late 1940s and 1970.

In terms of style, Aburish presents an easy going and attractive narrative. His sources and research are, by and large, credible.

Certainly several pro-Arab nationalism reviewers will find Aburish's book not credible, but whoever wants to dispute this account should provide a better one instead of employing emotions only in criticizing this work.

Excellent Resource!

This book is an excellent resource for parents and professionals who work with children on the autism spectrum. This book describes a different method of ABA teaching- Teaching Interactions. Many people believe that ABA is only Discreet Trial Teaching and can only be used to teach rote skills. This book shows that ABA can be used to teach social skills, higher-order thinking skills, older children, and "high-functioning" children. I highly recommend this!

An Invaluable Tool for ABA Practitioners

This is a great book for those in the ABA field or for parents of kiddos on the spectrum. There are a lot of great lessons and it makes you think more in depth about breaking down complex social interactions into smaller steps. There are a lot of things neuro-typically developing people take for granted in social situations that we simply do not think about. A must have for any practitioner working with children on the Autism Spectrum.

I would recommend this to parents and professionals with autistic children in terapy. we have used "a work in progress" for 3 years now, and these two books are linked. So i kinda know how its structure. It have a good progress from the beginning, but fore more pictures and practical views we also use teaching children with autism to mind-read.

good beginer/intermediate book

I bought this book for my boys 7 and 8 as a step up from a movie tunes book that was a little too easy. This book was the right dificulty level making them have to work a little harder for the finished product but not too hard for kids with only 1 year of piano lessons. I took a star away because in my opinion a sheet music book should be made in such a way that the book and pages can be comfortably opened all the way to allow for the book to sit on a music stand without damaging the book. This book has a thick spine and when you open the pages it "cracks the spine" which will eventually cause pages to come loose and fall out. Im probably asking too much for the price point but heck form/function accounts for something

We saw a bigger, more advanced book of Harry Potter sheet music in our local music store. This was a nice start for my boys, 11 and 7. They found their favorite Harry Potter songs and jumped right in. It is still challenging for them, but not so much that it is off-putting.

This book was perfect for my daughter, but when it arrived it was in poor condition, as if it had been owned already: pages were bent and the spine was cracked in several spots. If I hadn't needed it as a gift so soon after it arrived, it would have gone straight back to be replaced.

About the Author

Narbik Kocharians, CCIE No. 12410 (Routing and Switching, Security, SP), is a Triple CCIE with more than 32 years of experience in the IT industry. He has designed, implemented, and supported numerous enterprise networks. Narbik is the president of Micronics Training Inc. (www.micronicstraining.com), where he teaches CCIE R&S and SP boot camps.

 

Peter Palúch, CCIE No. 23527 (Routing and Switching), is an assistant professor, Cisco Networking Academy instructor, and instructor trainer at the Faculty of Management Science and Informatics, University of Zilina, Slovakia. Peter has cooperated in various educational activities in Slovakia and abroad, focusing on networking and Linux-based network server systems. He is also active at the Cisco Support Community, holding the Cisco Designated VIP award in LAN & WAN Routing and Switching areas since the award program inception in 2011. Upon invitation by Cisco in 2012, Peter joined two Job Task Analysis groups that assisted defining the upcoming CCIE R&S and CCNP R&S certification exam topics. Peter holds an M.Sc. degree in Applied Informatics and a doctoral degree in the area of VoIP quality degradation factors. Together with his students, Peter has started the project of implementing the EIGRP routing protocol into the Quagga open-source routing software suite, and has been driving the effort since its inception in 2013.

v4.0.1 OCG? - Not Quite

*** Note - the following paragraph was written after reading only the first 7 chapters of the book and may have been a little harsh ***

I have to agree with the first reviewer. I will not be terribly thorough in my review as I've only skimmed through the first 6-7 chapters and found some somewhat alarming similarities to this book and the v4.0 OCG. The CCIE v5 blueprint has removed items such as RITE and RMON altogether but they are copied and pasted from Wendell Odom's book as if they are still testable topics. It is disappointing to see this book's content rushed through like this with little regard for matching contents of this "Certification Guide" to the blueprint that Cisco has made so public. I will modify my review after reading the whole book if I found it had value on it's own merit rather than the words blindly taken from previous authors. There are even portion of the text that were taken from v4.0 that are now incorrect such as the IPv4 Header reference diagram at the end of Chapter 4. It was noted fine in v4.0, why the change? The one positive note is that most of the changes from the errata for the final edition of the v4.0 OCG have been incorporated from what I have found so far in the this text. Wanted to end on a somewhat positive note.

The first chapters still leave something to be desired in my opinion but the chapters covering new IOS 15 configuration and feature sets of the routing protocols that are on the blueprint are a great resource. There are some section where the authors make references as though a diagram is present that lead me to draw my own but that is a trifling matter; the content appears to be great for those sections. I will update again with another star or 2 if this is the level of content throughout the remainder of the book.

Having finished the first read-through of the text, I have amended my rating to reflect my overall thoughts on the book. I feel that the high cost of the book is not warranted as much of it was already written in previous versions of the book without rewording of any sort. The remaining chapters do have some great content and the new material was covered well in my non-expert opinion. I feel that a candidate will get as much reading the titles in the "Recommended Reading" section at the end of each chapter than buying this book, incurring extra cost. If this book were more reasonably priced in the price range of an addendum to the previous version then my rating would increase 1-2 more stars as the material is as great as when Wendell first penned it. My only frustration with the material itself was already stated, pointing to those sections that are no longer testable for either the Written or Lab portion of the test yet still included in this version of the text.

Now onto more reading and lab work. Good luck to all who read this as I'm sure persons interested in this text are the same ones who are also pursuing this certification.

Great book for CCIE R&S v5 students

I am still at the EIGRP chapter and I do not agree with other reviewers that state that this book is simply a rushed text edited from the v4 book.

The EIGRP chapter is completely different (not to mention updated to named-mode/wide-metrics) and if you compare the depth of the explanations you will notice that it is much different in goals. The old book focuses on a quick topic review, this book focuses on specific points the authors believe a CCIE candidate must master.

No CCIE candidate is expected to read a couple books and be ready to get his/her digits. This is a book well worthy a reading to complement other sources. You will see insights from the authors so well explained it will feel you are sitting a bootcamp in front of them.

I think it's been fantastic so far

I'm not sure where the negativity is coming from in the reviews on this book. I think it's been fantastic so far, I'm roughly 3 chapters in. The CCIE exam has changed, however the topics covered in this volume (STP, OSPF, ISIS, TCP/IP, RIP, etc) haven't changed in 10+ years for the most part. There is nothing that can be said in this book that hasn't been said in countless others, which we've probably all read. If that's the case, then skip it. However if I'm going to invest the time in reading 800 pages for an exam that I'm probably going to fail 5 times, I'm going to spend the $65 and get the most current version of the book. Plus, even reading the same material but worded and presented in a different way is proven to help retention. Volume 2 is where the "new" material is going to be, and by new I mean the CCIE v5 exam topics that haven't been published in an official study guide or foundation learning guide textbook. Personally, I think of this as a refresher and an introduction to Narbik's writing style in preparation for volume 2. I consider this a must-have for anybody getting serious about taking the CCIE v5 written their first time around.
