It is written as a user’s manual for the openly available innovative Conveyance and Afflux Estimation System (CES-AES) software, with which water levels, flows and velocities in channels can be calculated. The impact of factors influencing these levels and the sensitivity of channels to extreme levels can also be assessed. Approaches and solutions are focused on addressing environmental, flood risk and land drainage objectives. Practical Channel Hydraulics is the first reference guide that focuses in detail on estimating roughness, conveyance and afflux in fluvial hydraulics. With its universal approach and the application of metric units, both book and software serve an international audience of consultants and engineers dealing with river modelling, flood risk assessment, maintenance of watercourses and the design of drainage systems. Suited as course material for training graduate Master’s students in civil and environmental engineering or geomorphology who focus on river and flood engineering, as well as for professional training in flood risk management issues, open channel flow hydraulics and modelling.

The CES-AES software development followed recommendations by practitioners and academics in the UK Network on Conveyance in River Flood Plain Systems, following the Autumn 2000 floods, that operating authorities should make better use of recent improved knowledge on conveyance and related flood (or drainage) level estimation. This led to a Targeted Programme of Research aimed at improving conveyance estimation and subsequent integration with other research on afflux at bridges and culverts at high flows. The CES-AES software tool aims to improve and assist with the estimation of:

  • hydraulic roughness
  • water levels (and corresponding channel and structure conveyance)
  • flow (given slope); section-average and spatial velocities
  • backwater profiles upstream of a known flow-head control e.g. weir (steady)
  • afflux upstream of bridges and culverts
  • uncertainty in water level

Short, detailed and small.

Human Evolution by Bernard Wood is just the facts and only the facts. At 131 pages this is all the updated information about human related fossils, up to the year 2005, and the debates about what they mean.

The book starts out explaining about the Tree Of Life, what fossils are, how they are found and how they are used as evidence. Everything is clear and crisp, Mr. Wood treats the reader to a lesson in paleoanthropology, without moving too swiftly but without talking down to the reader. Can be finished in a day or two, no problem.

Great for people new to the subject or as a small guide for those on the go.

The biology of human evolution

Though this is another admirable publication in Oxford's Very Short Introduction series, generally intended for readership by non-specialists, the degree of biological detail here make this more suitable for undergraduate biologists with an interest in paleoanthropology. The author is himself a medically qualified paleoanthropologist, a Professor of Human Origins at the George Washington University in America, so there is much, perhaps necessarily, anatomical detail about the fossil human remains that have been unearthed.

After an introduction that takes us from biblical accounts of our origins, through the work of Vesalius, Lamarck, Darwin, Huxley, Lyell and Mendel, right up to Watson and Crick and the human genome project, we are treated to a discussion of the biological differentiation of humans (hominins) and panins, gorillas and orang-utans - our genetic similarities and anatomical differences.

There are details of oxygen isotope measurement as a guide to past climates; methods of dating fossils and the sediments or rocks in which they are found; and how the age and sex of hominins is determined from the skeletal fragments that anthropologists usually have to be content with. The author points out that while `modern humans have a substantial fossil record . . . the fossil record for chimpanzees [our genetically nearest animal relatives] is virtually non-existent.' So the story is largely one of intelligent piecing together of our ancestry from what remains there are.

It was Darwin who first suggested that, as we are probably related to the apes and they exist largely in Africa, this would be a good place to start looking for human remains. Modern biologists tell us that indeed we did, in the beginning, `come out of Africa'.

This is a well-written book full of fascinating, if at times a little overwhelming, detail. The book about Evolution in general by the Charlesworths in the same series is more accessible to the non-specialist.

Valdivielso's review has it right. This is a tightly and carefully organized summary, and it requires careful reading. In addition, each chapter ends with a valuable "Points to Watch," which alert readers to on-going debates and uncertainties. Bravo!

The book is not what I would describe as an erudite academic volume. Rather it's a careful collection of analytical posts from the Saker's very popular blog (averaging a million hits a month). As such, you can read it straight through, or skip around if you prefer, the articles for the most part stand alone. As you read through the book, bit by bit and piece by piece, you will begin to slowly assimilate a forest view of the way things really are that transcends the confusion of the individual trees, the front page headlines. This view will not be perfect, because we are all always learning, but you will most definitely understand the grander scheme of things and you will be able to more easily recognize disinformation when it is served to you by the state and its adoring press.

The Essential Saker is essential reading for anyone wanted to understand the times we live in.

The One-Stop Shop For All You Need to Know About the Geo-Politics of Our Times.

Saker is one of the very best military analysts of our times. He's unusual in that he comes from the Eastern side of the planet, (Russia) and yet writes for Western readers. He's sympathetic to Muslims, and yet he is one of the most dangerous enemies of ISIL, which is nothing but a proxy army of mercenaries fighting for the highest bidder. ISIL is an enemy of Islam, of which the buyer of this book will find the facts about.

The Essential Saker is the product of many years of military intelligence training, coupled with a few years at the very center of the Neo-Con philosophy - John Hopkins University. So the Saker really knows the 'real deal' of the US political powers, who are spending American tax dollars on wars in the Middle East, and Saker doesn't hold back anything - he certainly speaks his mind. He is completely against the proxy wars being waged, first in Iraq, then Afghanstan, then Libya and now Syria.

The Saker, who also runs the hugely popular Blog "The Vineyard of the Saker", and as a former strategic analyst, he is an undisputed expert in dissecting all things Russian and Ukrainian and putting perspective ino the Syrian tragedy unfolding before our eyes. His views are balanced, extremely informative and challenging.

More than a Memorization Tool!

When you need strength to face tough times, where should you turn? God's Word! Newly revised, this collection provides you with a reservoir of wisdom as you glean insights from 12 well-known Christian authors and memorize 72 Scripture passages on anger, guilt, perfectionism, sexuality, money, and more. Kit includes a 128-page Life Issues manual, 48 verse cards, and a plastic holder.

I was a little concerned about this book when I signed up for it. I figured it would be academic in its approach after all it came with verse cards. However, what I found was something much more useful. The book does provide verse cards but it also gives practical steps on how to memorize scripture. The basic stuff that we've probably all heard before. They also take that huge step of giving guidelines about how to know God's will, again, solid Biblical foundation.

It's what they offered next that I loved. Each chapter tackles an issues that are faced every day. One chapter talks about our self-imagine, including how we should view ourselves. Once you finish the chapter the authors list what scriptures that one should memorize. It makes the scripture memorization much more real. It's not just memorize this scriptures and here's how, but they give you the WHY! Struggling with depression? There's a chapter about depression. It talks about the downward spiral that many of us have faced. With well told stories of others who have experienced the disillusionment that leads to discouragement that finally lands us in depression. The chapter ends with the reminder that there is no condemnation. Then again questions to mediate upon and scripture. One of the things I love about the Navigators is it all revolves around the Word of God.

The other reason I like this book is I work on a college campus I interact with students almost daily. This book provides me a resource on how to encourage them in their daily lives. It gives me scripture to pray over them with. I see this book as a wonderful resource for pastors and lay leaders alike. Actually I think it's a good resource for every Christian. God's Word is truly our lifeline in this world.

Thank you to NavPress for the opportunity to read this book and give a review. I wish I could say I have all the scripture cards committed to memory, I don't. I hope to some day. But regardless, I have a book that is a wonderful tool to encourage myself and those that God may bring along my path.

Simple and Practical

NavPress's Topical Memory System consists of a course workbook with an introduction to memorization and meditation of Scripture and twelve essays by various authors on topics that most people struggle with. Topics include knowing God's will, self-image, dealing with sin, guilt, perfectionism, anger, depression, sex, money, stress, suffering, and love. The other component is a book of memory verse cards and a card holder. The cards are perforated so you can you easily separate them and put them into the holder. Each topic has six memory verses written in six versions, so hopefully your version of choice is included.

What a wonderful resource! I know I need to memorize Scripture, but I find it somewhat difficult. This book gives simple, practical helps that I feel certain will make things a little easier. The essays were helpful to gain biblical perspective on each of the twelve issues. Additionally, the questions at the end of each chapter helped me really digest what I studied in the Scriptures. The system is set up in a way where you can master this discipline as long as you are just that ... disciplined. This would be a great book to work through with an accountability partner or small group or even your spouse.

The following quote pretty much sums up the basis for the rest of the book:

"The most substantial way to solve your deepest problems is to take them to God in prayer and to find His solutions in Scripture. In prayer, we call out to the living God from the depths of our soul; in Scripture memory and meditation, we find that God is calling us from the depths of His living Word. ... Both memory and meditation are vitally important. Scripture memory puts God's Word in your mind. Prayerful meditation puts God's Word in your mind. Having the mind of God directing your life can really help you overcome your anxieties" (pg. 6).

Great for memorization

I love this product. It was recommended by my pastor. There are several different products from the Navigators but I have really enjoyed the Life Issues because it is very applicable to problems in every day life. It has a section on anger, a section on depression, perfectionism, knowing God's will, and a host of current topics that are helpful. The memory cards are great and you can choose from one of the 6 translations that you want to memorize. The memory cards are from the KJV, NASB, NIV, NKJV, ESV and the NLT. They come with a small plastic carrier that holds several cards and it has a clear pocket on the outside of the carrier for the scripture that you are working on that day. It is easy to pull out and review. I highly recommend it.
